Benefits – Meditation/Prayer

Is your daily routine so busy and full of activities that it’s causing you stress and agitation? We’ve all heard of the health risks associated with too much stress, but how can you reduce that stress and find peace in your life?
To achieve a sense of peace, you can turn to the gift of prayer and meditation.

There are many benefits to meditation and prayer:

1. Stress reduction. Both meditation and prayer are wonderful for reducing stress. You’ll find that it helps you learn how to get away from the worries of life to a more peaceful state of mind. Just 15 minutes a day can make a huge difference by bringing peace and relaxation to your body and mind. A few minutes each day isn’t much, considering that the positive effects will last hours.

2. Improved health. Many studies have proven that prayer and meditation foster vibrant health. Usually these health benefits, such as lower blood pressure and decreased risk of heart disease, occur because of the lowered stress levels.
Physical problems are often a symptom of turmoil on the inside and prayer and meditation can help to overcome that turmoil.

3. Better control over your thoughts. Having negative thoughts from time to time is part of being human. Many people who are stressed don’t believe they’re able to control what they think. The stress mounts, tempers flair, and before long arguments ensue. However, by bringing prayer and meditation into your life, it’s possible to control your thoughts and stop negative thinking as soon as it happens. This helps keep your mind at peace.

4. Happiness. Both peace of mind and happiness are true benefits of meditation and prayer. Everyone is seeking happiness in their lives, and when you’re able to find peace of mind through prayer and meditation, you’re also welcoming happiness into your life. By spending some time in personal reflection, you’ll gain a greater wisdom of your mission in this life, and you’ll be better able to appreciate all that you’ve been given, both good and bad. Meditation and prayer help banish those negative thoughts that threaten your peace of mind.

5. Better concentration. As you pray and meditate, you welcome peace and tranquillity into your mind, which then affects how you live your life. When you alleviate the stresses in your life, you’re better able to concentrate on the things that are important, such as family or work. Continued prayer and meditation will help you expand your focus to multiple areas of your life.

Although prayer and meditation can provide peace in your life, it can be hard to make the time at first, but it’s easier than you think. Simply find a quiet place in your home and allow yourself to relax and feel at peace for 10-15 minutes. You deserve those 15 minutes of peace each day!

While there are plenty of positive benefits of prayer and meditation, it may take practice and perseverance to achieve them. Over time you’ll begin to experience this wonderful gift in your own life and you’ll be thankful that you did!
Here’s an excellent way to start enjoying the benefits of meditation today. The Deep Zen audio program is easy for anyone wanting to learn how to meditate and helps advanced mediators achieve deeper levels of meditation too.

The Golden Ladder of Giving
By Maimonides

  1. To give reluctantly,
the gift of the hand, but not of the heart.
  2. To give cheerfully,
but not in proportion to need.
  3. To give cheerfully and proportionately,
    but not until solicited.
  4. To give cheerfully, proportionately, and unsolicited,
but to put the gift into the poor person’s hand, thus creating shame.
  5. To give in such a way that the distressed may know their benefactor,
without being known to him or her.
  6. To know the objects of our bounty,
    but remain unknown to them.
  7. To give so that the benefactor may not know those whom he has relieved,
and they shall not know him.
  8. To prevent poverty by teaching a trade, setting a person up in business,
or in some other way preventing the needof charity.

About the Author – Maimonides (1135 -1204)
During the Middle Ages he was a Jewish rabbi, physican and philosopher While his words were written many years ago their wisdom can still apply today.

Success and Giving

By Catherine Pulsifer

What is success?

To some it is money; to others it is position; yet to others, it is power.

In developing your own definition of success, think of others and how you can help them.

If success means money to you,
then donate money to a worthwhile charity.

If success means a position of status,
then share your knowledge with others.

If success means power to you,
then use that to advance worthwhile causes.

All to often, we get caught up in all the things we want, and forget to give back to the world. Our society seems to place more value on how much we have rather than how much we give.

What a different world it would be if society placed more value on how much we gave!

The inspirational words of wisdom said by Martin Luther King, Jr.,
sums up our thought:

“We are prone to judge success by the index of our salaries
or the size of our automobile rather than by
the quality of our service and relationship to humanity.”

Giving is Fun

By Kenneth Irving Brown

If you believe in something,
you support it.

If you support something, the time comes when good wishes and cordial words are not enough and your hand reaches for your pocketbook.

Then the fun begins.
For giving is fun.

If you refuse to give, your support is wavering; and if your support is wavering, it can’t be that you believe in that something in any strong way.

Maybe our account books, after all, offer the honest list of those things in which we really believe.

More inspirational words of wisdom on giving:

Make all you can, save all you can, give all you can.
John Wesley

No person was ever honored for what he received.
He was honored for what he gave.
Calvin Coolidge

He who obtains has little. He who scatters has much.
Lao-Tzu

The value of a man resides in what he gives
and not in what he is capable of receiving.
Albert Einstein

Bill Vaughan

“Poverty is like punishment for a crime you didn’t commit.”

Eli Khamarov

“The key to ending extreme poverty is to enable the poorest of the poor to get their foot on the ladder of development. The ladder of development hovers overhead, and the poorest of the poor are stuck beneath it. They lack the minimum amount of capital necessary to get a foothold, and therefore need a boost up to the first rung.”

Jeffrey D. Sachs

“Extreme poverty is the best breeding ground on earth for disease, political instability, and terrorism.”

Jeffrey Sachs

“Every morning our newspapers could read, ‘More than 20,000 people perished yesterday of extreme poverty.’ How? The poor die in hospital wards that lack drugs, in villages that lack antimalarial bed nets, in houses that lack safe drinking water. They die namelessly, without public comment. Sadly, sad stories rarely get written.”

Jeffrey Sachs

“Poverty is the worst form of violence.”

60 Tips for a Happy Marriage

A happy marriage is just like a healthy plant. If you give the plant water, sun and air, it blossoms. A marriage requires an equal amount of nurturing if it is to blossom. As much as it is hard to accept, a nice wedding and the good intentions you have to stay together forever are not enough to produce a successful, happy marriage. The excitement and joy that newly-wed couples often experience tend to wear off within the first year of marriage and so, if you want to celebrate your 50th anniversary with your partner one day, you both need to make a conscious decision to “water” your relationship. To reach such as stage is a wonderful thing. The thought of reaching our 50th anniversary means more to me now than ever before, because my mom and dad just recently celebrated their 50th anniversary. I am so happy for them, and even more determined now to do the same.

When I coach couples on the verge of divorce, I find that generally, each individual is not happy within himself or herself and so their attempts to make each other happy are futile, because being happy as an individual is the first step.

As I have written many times on this blog, in newsletters and said in workshops, for any relationship to be happy, first each party must learn how to be happy individually.

I recommend to all couples that come to me for coaching that they create and then share a list of 50 things that make each one of them happy. It is quite incredible to see just how surprised most of them are when they read their partner’s list. Most times, many of the items on the list are simple, cheap and even free. Without fail, the reaction I always get is, “It is so easy to make my partner happy, if only I had known earlier…”

Life is much easier when you know the things that make you and your partner happy. Here is a list of 30 things husbands can do to make their wives happy and 30 things wives can do to make their husbands happy. Please remember, the list here is just a start. It is also a bit stereotypical, so feel free to swap items with your partner and do what works for you.

30 ways to keep her happy

  1. SMS her some love during the day.
  2. Help her fill in her 12-hugs-a-day tank with lots of hugs (and kisses).
  3. Cook dinner from time to time. Husbands who cook have happier marriages.
  4. Stay and help while cleaning up after meals. Many couples fight over cleaning up. If you do it together, it will take half the time, become part of your quality time and then leave more time for romance.
  5. Find a loving nickname for her.
  6. Say “I love you” when you meet and when you say good-bye.
  7. Mark special dates on your calendar. There are not that many dates to remember: mainly her birthday and your wedding anniversary. But if you really want to be a super husband, remember the date that you first became a couple.
  8. Take the kids out on your own from time to time to give her some space. It can be as simple as offering some time off on the weekend to allow her to sleep in a little bit longer, or as easy as organizing an evening out with the kids.
  9. When she is upset, listen to her but do not try to give advice (unless she asks for it).
  10. Tell her how much you love to touch and smell her.
  11. Invite her to a movie or a restaurant like you would have if you were dating.
  12. Write her love notes and put them in places where she would not expect to find them, like inside the laundry basket, on the mirror in the bathroom, inside her wallet or on the visor in her car.
  13. Shower the kids or read them a story. I have to say that having watched my husband doing these things for many years with our children makes me love him more and more everyday. It is such a simple, beautiful thing to see father and kids reading a story together, that it makes the entire family happy.
  14. Offer some technical help if she is struggling with remotes, computers or electrical wiring.
  15. Say something nice about her choice in clothes.
  16. Bring her flowers.
  17. Give her a massage.
  18. You are strong and manly. Take the garbage out.
  19. Bring home dinner from time to time as a surprise. Try not to do this if she has already prepared a dinner. It is always better to check first and make sure the dinner is not all ready yet.
  20. Tell her “I trust you to…” Any positive ending to this sentence works miracles in any relationship. Count how many times you say this phrase during your relationship and I am sure you will find it much easier to spend many happy years together.
  21. Give her a kiss for no reason. Kiss for the love of kissing. Kiss in the morning and remember to always, always, always kiss at night before you fall asleep, even (especially) if you have just had a fight.
  22. Stay cool when she is having a long phone conversation with her girlfriend, mom or sister. These phone calls are a way for her to work things out and get emotional support. They are good for you…
  23. Bring home a sexy movie from the video shop to watch together.
  24. Learn how to use the washing machine and use it without being asked.
  25. Go shopping with her if she asks you to. Consider this quality time. You can do the grocery shopping while you talk together about your plans and dreams.
  26. Clean the toilet from time to time.
  27. Bring her small gifts.
  28. Hold her hand even when there are people around. It is a public display of affection and this is important to her.
  29. Initiate weekends away.
  30. Keep a photo of her in your wallet.

30 ways to keep him happy

  31. Give him some time to watch his favorite TV show (OK, shows).
  32. Invite his friends over for a BBQ.
  33. Tell him how much you love the way he touches you.
  34. Have dinner ready when he comes home from work. Add candles even if there are kids sitting at the table. It is good for them to watch mom and dad expressing their love.
  35. Call him during the day and whisper loving things into the phone.
  36. Offer him his favorite drink.
  37. Tell him how much you love him. Say “I love you” when you meet and when you say good-bye, even on the phone.
  38. Ask him about his day and listen.
  39. When you go shopping, ask him if he wants you to get him something.
  40. Do not tell him he is a baby when he is sick and has “man cold” (the kind of cold that, if you were to have, would make you feel a bit off, but could easily kill him…). Grown men need attention and being sick is their way of getting it when nothing else seems to work.
  41. Tell him he is right sometimes.
  42. Buy yourself a sexy outfit. It will make your husband very happy. You are actually buying it as a present for him, as he is the one who will ultimately take it off.
  43. Give him a massage.
  44. Tell him he smells good.
  45. Make him his favorite dish and remember to tell him that you chose the dish especially for him.
  46. Wash his car as a surprise (or get the kids to do it for a double bonus).
  47. If he is busy and has to miss a TV show that he likes, record it for him.
  48. Tell him how much you appreciate his efforts to come home early, to spend time with the kids, to help, etc.
  49. Ask him, “Is there anything I can do to help?”
  50. Go shopping with him if he wants you to.
  51. Get him his favorite after-shave before his old bottle runs out.
  52. Smile.
  53. Suggest from time to time that he go out with his friends.
  54. Keep his photo in your wallet.
  55. Make a genuine effort to get along with his mom.
  56. Put his trophies in a prominent place and proudly show them to visitors.
  57. Send him loving, suggestive emails.
  58. Tell him he is the best dad to your kids, more than you could ever ask for.
  59. Touch him from time to time. When he is busy, just walk up to him and run your fingers through his hair.
  60. Prepare his lunch box for the day.

As you can see, there are probably as many items that can be added to these lists as there are couples in the world. Each one of us has different desires and expectations of a relationship. It is easier to obtain your desired life if the other party also helps work to make the marriage a happy one. The longer the list of things you have that you can do to make your partner happy, the longer your marriage will be. These lists are just the beginning. Make your own lists and start making your marriage a happy and fulfilling one.

Benefits – Donate to Charities

How to reward yourself by giving time and money to others, from fancy cars and expensive clothes to fine dining and exotic vacations, there are many ways you can spend your hard-earned dollars. And there is nothing wrong with rewarding yourself for a job well done — but what would happen if you rewarded someone else instead?

A recent study by Harvard Business School faculty and graduate students titled “Feeling Good about Giving: The Benefits (and Costs) of Self-Interested Charitable Behavior,” explores the ways in which charitable behavior can lead to benefits for the giver. While the concept that giving to others can make you feel good about yourself is not revolutionary, there are several more subtle ways that giving your money or time for a cause can benefit your psychological, spiritual and emotional well-being.

Here are five reasons to donate to charity

Based on the research of the Harvard Business School as well as other experts and websites.

Donations are tax deductible

When you donate to a charitable organization or a non-profit group, the amount you donate is tax deductible. But not only is the money you give tax deductible, so are the amounts you spend on travel, parking costs and even convention and event fees that are related to the non-profit group, as long as you are not being reimbursed by the charity for these expenses.

Giving to charity may improve your sense of well-being

The act of helping others can create an improved sense of well-being. Knowing that you sacrificed something such as time, finances or property in order to help others in need can give you a sense of purpose in life or work and inner satisfaction.

Supporting a cause can help keep you informed about issues of social injustice

When considering donating to a charity, many people tend to research the issues connected to that organization. As a result, you become more educated about social injustices around the world. You may discover new points of view and opinions on topics about which you were previously uniformed. This knowledge may position you to help increase the awareness of social problems among those in your sphere of influence from a balanced and educated standpoint.

Giving to charity out of spiritual conviction can strengthen your spiritual life

Selfless giving is a key component to many spiritual and religious belief systems. Recognizing that you have taken action in line with your spiritual beliefs by offering your resources to others in need can bring a sense of inner peace and contentment.

Volunteering with a charity may result in physical and social benefits

After donating financially to a charity or non-profit organization, you may feel an inner pull to become more involved with the cause by donating your time and skill as well. By volunteering, you have the opportunity to build your social circles while reaping the physical, mental and spiritual benefits from the labor you contribute to your favourite cause.

Benefits – Vitamins

Vitamins and minerals are considered essential nutrients—because acting in concert, they perform hundreds of roles in the body. They help shore up bones, heal wounds, and bolster your immune system. They also convert food into energy, and repair cellular damage.

Essential nutrients for your body

Every day, your body produces skin, muscle, and bone. It churns out rich red blood that carries nutrients and oxygen to remote outposts, and it sends nerve signals skipping along thousands of miles of brain and body pathways. It also formulates chemical messengers that shuttle from one organ to another, issuing the instructions that help sustain your life.

But to do all this, your body requires some raw materials. These include at least 30 vitamins, minerals, and dietary components that your body needs but cannot manufacture on its own in sufficient amounts.

Vitamins and minerals are considered essential nutrients—because acting in concert, they perform hundreds of roles in the body. They help shore up bones, heal wounds, and bolster your immune system. They also convert food into energy, and repair cellular damage.

But trying to keep track of what all these vitamins and minerals do can be confusing. Read enough articles on the topic, and your eyes may swim with the alphabet-soup references to these nutrients, which are known mainly be their initials (such as vitamins A,B,C,D,E, and K—to name just a few).

In this article, you’ll gain a better understanding of what these vitamins and minerals actually do in the body and why you want to make sure you’re getting enough of them.

Micronutrients with a big role in the body

Vitamins and minerals are often called micronutrients because your body needs only tiny amounts of them. Yet failing to get even those small quantities virtually guarantees disease. Here are a few examples of diseases that can result from vitamin deficiencies:

  • Scurvy. Old-time sailors learned that living for months without fresh fruits or vegetables—the main sources of vitamin C—causes the bleeding gums and listlessness of scurvy.
  • Blindness. In some developing countries, people still become blind from vitamin A deficiency.
  • Rickets. A deficiency in vitamin D can cause rickets, a condition marked by soft, weak bones that can lead to skeletal deformities such as bowed legs. Partly to combat rickets, the U.S. has fortified milk with vitamin D since the 1930s.

Just as a lack of key micronutrients can cause substantial harm to your body, getting sufficient quantities can provide a substantial benefit. Some examples of these benefits:

  • Strong bones. A combination of calcium, vitamin D, vitamin K, magnesium, and phosphorus protects your bones against fractures.
  • Prevents birth defects. Taking folic acid supplements early in pregnancy helps prevent brain and spinal birth defects in offspring.
  • Healthy teeth. The mineral fluoride not only helps bone formation but also keeps dental cavities from starting or worsening.

The difference between vitamins and minerals

Although they are all considered micronutrients, vitamins and minerals differ in basic ways. Vitamins are organic and can be broken down by heat, air, or acid. Minerals are inorganic and hold on to their chemical structure.

So why does this matter? It means the minerals in soil and water easily find their way into your body through the plants, fish, animals, and fluids you consume. But it’s tougher to shuttle vitamins from food and other sources into your body because cooking, storage, and simple exposure to air can inactivate these more fragile compounds.

Interacting—in good ways and bad

Many micronutrients interact. Vitamin D enables your body to pluck calcium from food sources passing through your digestive tract rather than harvesting it from your bones. Vitamin C helps you absorb iron.

The interplay of micronutrients isn’t always cooperative, however. For example, vitamin C blocks your body’s ability to assimilate the essential mineral copper. And even a minor overload of the mineral manganese can worsen iron deficiency.

A closer look at water-soluble vitamins

Water-soluble vitamins are packed into the watery portions of the foods you eat. They are absorbed directly into the bloodstream as food is broken down during digestion or as a supplement dissolves.

Because much of your body consists of water, many of the water-soluble vitamins circulate easily in your body. Your kidneys continuously regulate levels of water-soluble vitamins, shunting excesses out of the body in your urine.

They help develop leadership qualities and foster team spirit in kids. They involve competition; they involve winning and losing. This exposes children to both aspects of life, successes and failures. Sports build a competitive spirit in children and teach them to be participative irrespective of whether the result is victory or defeat. Playing sports teaches them to accept both successes and failures with a positive spirit. Sports teach you to think with a cool head. The most important benefit of sports is the sportsman spirit they inculcate. Sports help you become more sporting, more positive and stronger.

Playing sports involves directed thinking. It requires you to strategize. You need to devise ways to score goals, runs or earn points, as the case may be. This definitely involves clever thinking, which sports encourage. Studies show that kids who play sports regularly fare well in academics and do well in school.

Sports make you happy. I know anyone would agree with this. When sports are played at the state or national level, they increase the players’ sense of belonging to their community or country. Here are some of the many benefits of a smile:Benefits of a smile: A healthier immune system

Various studies conducted over the years have shown that smiling and laughter can boost the functioning of the immune system. This may help to reduce your risk of developing everything from the common cold to chronic diseases such as cancer. Could there be a less expensive medicine than this?
Benefits of a smile: Helps to relieve stress
Smiling and laughter helps to promote release of a “feel good” group of hormones calledendorphins. These are the same group of hormones responsible for the runners high you hear so much about. If you don’t have time to get to the gym for a hard run, try adding a smile and a bit of laughter to boost these natural, stress relieving hormones.
Benefits of a smile: A smile is beautiful

Why do American spend thousands of dollars on makeup and cosmetic procedures to look more attractive and then walk around with a scowl on their faces? The most beautiful face in the world won’t be pleasing with down turned lips and a sour expression. In contrast, a plain face can be transformed by the power of a smile. If you want to look better, try adding a genuine smile.
Benefits of a smile: A smile inspires others
When you smile at a stranger you not only boost your own health and beauty, you also send a positive messagethat can potentially change someone else’s mood for the better. The stranger you graced with your smile may go on to pass the kindness to someone else. Who knows how far your original smile will travel?
Benefits of a smile: Smiling canincrease your chances for success
When you smile, you appear confident and capable. Given the choice between two equally qualified job candidates, the smiling candidate is going to be perceived as being more of a team player and easier to workwith. Who do you think is more likely to get the job offer?
The next time you’re tempted to face the world with a frown, remember another old quotation. “It takes seventeen muscles to smile and forty-three to frown”.
When you smile, you appear confident and capable. Given the choice between two equally qualified job candidates, the smiling candidate is going to be perceived as being more of a team player and easier to work with. Who do you think is more likely to get the job offer?

Smile! The Remarkable Personal Benefits of Smiling by SixWise.comThere may be more to the song “Put on a Happy Face” than just a catchy tune-putting on a happy face is actually good for you, and those around you. Now there’s a reason to smile.
Smile Your Way to a Better Future

Researchers of a study led by Dr. Dacher Keltner of the University of California were able to predict the future success (30 years down the road!) of 21-year-old women just by looking at their photographs. The key appeared to be the intensity of the women’s smiles.

“Women who displayed more positive emotion were more likely to be married by 27, less likely to have remained single into middle adulthood and more likely to have satisfying marriages 30 years later. This means we can take photos at a wedding and from them we may be able to tell how the marriage will go,” said Dr. Keltner.

How intense a woman smiled was related to personality tests and psychologists ranked the women by how they expressed emotions like joy and happiness. How did they know the smiles weren’t being faked? They used computer technology to measure 44 aspects of facial activity. If a smile were not genuine, certain muscles would not move (for instance, certain muscles around the eyes that we don’t consciously control move when we feel emotion).
Be Happy: Fight Illness Better
People who are optimistic (and these are the people who are out there smiling!) have stronger immune systems and are actually able to fight off illness better than pessimists.

Need a Quick Laugh?

The new employee stood before the paper shredder looking confused.

“Need some help?” a secretary walking by asked.

“Yes,” he replied, “How does this thing work?”

“Simple,” she said, taking the fat report from his hand and feeding it into the shredder.

“Thanks,” he said, “but where do the copies come out?”

“The research is very clear,” says Christopher Peterson, Ph.D, a University of Michigan professor who’s been studying optimism’s link to health for over two decades, “This is not some social science generalization. There is a link between optimistic attitudes and good health. It has been measured in a variety of ways. Overall, we have found that optimistic people are healthier. Their biological makeup is different. They have a more robust immune system.”

A Joke to Get You Smiling, Little Johnny’s kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local policestation where they saw pictures, tacked to a bulletin board, of the 10 most-wanted criminals. One of theyoungsters pointed to a picture and asked if itreally was the photo of a wanted person. “Yes,” said the policeman. “The detectives want very badly to capture him.” Little Johnny asked, “Why didn’t you keep him when you took his picture?”

It also appears that people who are optimistic are more likely to take care of themselves, which may be another reason why they tend to be healthier. Says Peterson, “Optimistic people act differently … [and] are more likely to do the things that public health experts say are associated with good health. Generally speaking, they eat sensibly, they don’t drink senselessly, they exercise and they get their sleep.”

Smile: You’ll Live Longer
According to a study published in the November 2004 issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry, elderly optimistic people, those who expected good things to happen (rather than bad things), were less likely to die than pessimists.
In fact, among the 65- to 85-year-old study participants, those who were most optimistic were 55 percent less likely to die from all causes than the most pessimistic people. What’s more, after researchers adjusted the results for age, smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical activity and other measures of health, the optimists were 71 percent less likely to die than the pessimists!
Smiling Feels Like Eating 2,000 Chocolate Bars

That’s right-according to The British Dental Health Foundation, a smile gives the same level of stimulation as eating 2,000 chocolate bars. The results were found after researchers measured brain and heart activity in volunteers as they were shown pictures of smiling people and given money and chocolate.
Dr. Nigel Carter, chief executive of the Foundation, pointed out, “We have long been drawing attention to the fact that smiling increases happiness both in yourself and those around you, so it is good to receive the backing of this scientific research … A healthy smile can improve your confidence, help you make friends and help you to succeed in your career … ”

A Little More Smile Motivation … A driver tucked this note under the windshield wiper of his automobile: “I’ve circled the block for 20 minutes. I’m late for an appointment, and if I don’t park here I’ll lose my job. Forgive us our trespasses.”
When he came back he found a parking ticket and this note: “I’ve circled the block for 20 years, and if I don’t give you a ticket, I’ll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation.”

Smiling is Contagious
What’s even better is that the more you smile, the more others will too. Says psychologist Dr. David Lewis, “Seeing a smile creates what is termed as a ‘halo’ effect, helping us to remember other happy events more vividly, feel more optimistic, more positive and more motivated.”
So what are you waiting for? Go ahead … Smile!

The Benefits of a Beautiful Smile

No one can disregard the importance of having a beautiful smile.

According to one survey sponsored by a fashion magazine, 92% of Americans believes that one of the most important features of their body is their stunning smile. rhythm cardiac and reduce tension

It is reflected to the rise of cosmetic dentistry procedures over the last 8 years. This figure can be interpreted in 2 different ways: either the procedures have become more accessible to many people or there is a growing concern over the aesthetics of their teeth. But whichever way, Americans have become more conscious and begin to place more importance on the appearance of their smiles as well as their dental health.

This is not only limited to the Western culture. Even in other parts of the world particularly Europe, Asia and Australia, there has been a steady increase in cosmetic dentistry procedures. This is because even if different cultures perceive beauty differently, most rely on physical appearance to determine how good the person is. There is nothing wrong with it. In fact, taking care of your physical appearance as well as dental appearance improves your overall well-being, which includes self-confidence and self-esteem.

A beautiful smile, therefore, develops your self-esteem and self-confidence. This is perhaps the most significant change you can experience. Since you are no longer conscious about the condition of your teeth, you can proudly show your beautiful set of teeth when you smile and laugh. And because you are more confident to face others, you can create a better first impression, whether to attract the opposite sex or to stay within the social scene.

Self-esteem and self-confidence are the measurement of your self-worth. If you possess the two, you can see your life in a much better perspective and extend yourself to a much larger group of people. Your personality and attitude determine how others see you, so when you treat yourself with high-self worth others will notice.

Smiling makes you feel better

A happy smile brings about a better-feeling mood. You can experiment yourself. Put a smile on your face (even if you don’t feel like smiling) and try to keep smiling for about a minute. See if your mood shifts up a notch towards more happiness.
The muscles used in smiling seem to have that real effect. This means that even if you’re not feeling too cheerful you can still ‘fake’ a smile for a short while and you will actually start to feel better.

Smiling reduces blood pressure

Research has shown that smiling brings about a definite and measurable reduction in blood pressure. And high blood pressure is a major health risk factor in these modern times.
If you don’t believe this, the next time you’re having your blood pressure checked, ask the doctor or health professional to let you smile for a minute or two after the first reading, and then take a second reading and see if it’s the same or lower than the first one.

Smiling boosts the immune system

The immune system is what helps you stay healthy and ward off colds, flu and other illnesses. If you smile a lot you can expect your body’s immune system to benefit, reducing your chances of getting ailments.
So, this is another reason why deliberately and frequently offering a smile can be of benefit to health and happiness.

Smiling reduces the feeling of stress overload

When I was a member of the Humewood Sea Scout Troop in the nineteen fifties, the ten-point Scout Law included as its eighth point:
“A Scout smiles and whistles under all difficulties.”
I guess Lord Robert Baden-Powell of Gilwell knew a thing or two when he put pen to paper to draw up the Scout Law for boys between the ages of 11 and 18.
The next time you’re feeling a bit ‘low’, overwhelmed, tired, despondent, just decide to offer a smile.
Hold it for just over a minute or so, and see how it changes your ‘vibrations’ and improves how you feel emotionally. Repeat the process again, and you should find that your mood lifts even more.
Smiling is an excellent method for uplifting one’s mood and energy, as well as one’s effectiveness in the task at hand. Try it yourself.

Smiling releases ‘happy chemicals’

A happy smile, whether you’re actually feeling happy at the time or not, releases endorphins, serotonin and other biochemical substances in the body.

Working in harmony, the effect of these changes in body chemistry is that we quickly start to feel happier. So, offering a smile at any time will clearly uplift one’s mood and cultivate a more frequent state of happiness.

Here’s some smiling homework

Take advantage of this knowledge and make it a point to practise giving a happy smile whenever you can.

Here are some suggestions for you to try for yourself:
