Soul Journey 2

Our Soul Journey

So beautifully written and so profound that it takes one’s breath away.On this rainy day I am in a mood for soul searching, so here is really profound article which I would like to share with you.

In our lifetime we meet many persons from different walks of life. Some we like, some we become fond of, with some we feel comfortable, with some we feel affectionate, some we want them to stay around with us, with some we strike meaningful conversation, with some we feel the warmth & sincerity, some become lifelong friends after having met the first time, some become loyal and trust worthy BUT there are some we don’t seem to like even during our first meeting.

There are some without assigning any genuine reason we would like to keep away from. Some we meet quite frankly at the first meeting we seem to develop a dislike, and there are some we don’t want to know them.

The Question is: Why does this happen? This is due to interaction between different souls. I came across this in a newsgroup and found it be profound, it sheds some light on why we react to some people and why we sometimes feel that we have known that person even though we have never met them.

With each person who passes through your life, you have a soul agreement. What this means is that, long ago in the realm of the soul, you promised to have some special encounter, share some life-shaping experience, complete some soul-honing work with that particular soul in this life.

Soul agreements are commitments to the evolution of our individual souls in conjunction with one another, as one by one we make the journey to that state of seamless awareness that the mystics call Enlightenment.

It is because of these agreements on a soul level that at times you may feel a mysterious strange connection with some other person, why difficult people may at times inexplicably inhabit your life, why you may find yourself on a journey with a particular person – as if you had an unwritten
contract to fulfill – and then discover that, as if by amputation, your association is suddenly over.

As the community of souls who have gathered together in life on Earth, we have agreed not only to remember for each other the pure state that was our origin, but also to act out whatever portion of the needlessly changing tableau of human experience.

We have been called upon to play to ensure our own soul’s growth, and that of the souls to whom we have made these deep promises. Some of us are here to be beautiful and strong, others to be cranky and difficult, some teach us through the searing heartbreak, others to instruct us through wisdom,
but no matter what role we are playing, we are all enacting a part in that one great spiritual destiny, which is to remember our eternal essence and move toward ultimate union.

So it is that every person you meet, each soul who crosses your path and affects you – wonderfully and terribly, briefly, or for a lifetime – is here for that reason, and every relationship you engage in, is but a small scene in the vast, ever-unfolding human panoply that is being endlessly enacted for the purpose of your soul’s development.

When you recognize this, you will suddenly, breathtakingly see that each person has been brought to you with a high and elegant purpose, that each soul has come to touch your soul and teach it, and that each relationship exists to hasten your own soul’s beautiful awakening.

No longer is anyone a stranger, no longer can any of your relationships be seen as failures or mistakes. In the light of the Spirit, we see that we are all playing out roles that are the fulfillment of an exquisite! And all-encompassing plan. To recognize this is to step out of conflict, and into Grace. For when we realize that life has been so beautifully designed, we will bask in the light of the Spirit and we will live in absolute Peace.

Oil – Benefits by apply at night

Did you know the Health Benefits of applying Oil to the soles of your feet before you go to bed?

1. One woman wrote that her grandfather died at the age of 87, no backache, no joint pain, no headache, no tooth loss, once he started saying that he had an old man when he lived in Calcutta. Had been advised I was laying stones on the railway line to apply oil on the soles of my feet while sleeping. It is my sole source of treatment and fitness.

2. One student said that my mother insisted on applying oil in the same way. Then he said that as a child, his vision was weakened. When she continued this process, my eye light gradually became fully and healthier.

3. A gentleman who is a businessman wrote that I went to Chitral for a holiday. I slept in a hotel there. I could not sleep. I started walking outside. The old watchman sitting outside at night started asking me, “What’s the matter?” I said I can’t sleep! He smiled and said, “Do you have any oil?” I said no, he went and brought oil and said, “Massage the soles of your feet for a few minutes.” Then he started snoring. Now I am back to normal.

4. I tried this oil massage on the soles of my feet before sleeping at night. This makes me sleep better and relieves fatigue.

5. I had a stomach problem. After massaging with oil on my soles, my stomach problem was cured in 2 days.

6. Actually! This process has a magical effect. I massaged the soles of my feet with oil before going to sleep at night. This process gave me a very relaxed sleep.

7. I have been doing this trick for the last 15 years. It makes me very sleepy. I also massage the soles of the feet of my young children with oil, which keeps them very happy and healthy.

8. My feet used to ache. I started massaging the soles of my feet with olive oil daily for 2 minutes before going to sleep at night. This process brought relief from the pain in my legs.

9. My legs were always swollen and when I walked, I used to get tired. I started this process of oil massage on the soles of my feet before going to sleep at night. In just 2 days, the swelling in my legs disappeared.

10 At night, before going to bed, I saw a tip of oil massage on the soles of my feet and started doing it. This made me sleep very peacefully.

1 1. It is a wonderful thing. This tip is better than sleeping pills for restful sleep. Now I sleep with oil soles on my feet every night.

12 My grandfather’s feet had a burning sensation and a headache. By the time he started applying pumpkin oil to his soles, the pain had gone away.

13. I had thyroid disease. My leg was hurting all the time. Last year someone suggested I to massage oil on the soles of my feet before going to bed at night. I am doing it permanently. Now I am generally quiet.

14. My feet were listening. I am massaging the soles of my feet with oil for four days before going to bed at night. There is a big difference.

15. I had hemorrhoids twelve or thirteen years ago. My friend took me to a sage who was 90 years old. He suggested rubbing oil on the palms of the hands, between the fingers, between the fingernails, and on the nails and said: Add four to five drops of oil to the navel and go to sleep. I began to follow Hakim Sahib’s advice. I was very relieved. This tip also solved my constipation problem. My body fatigue also goes away and I feel relaxed. Prevents snoring.

16. The oil massage on the soles of the feet is a tried and tested tip.

17. Massaging the soles of my feet with oil made me feel sleepy.

18. I had pain in my legs and knees. Ever since I read the tip of the oil massage on the soles of my feet, now I do it daily, it makes me sleepy.

19. Ever since I started using this prescription of oil massage on the soles of my feet before going to bed at night, I have had backache. My back pain has subsided and thank God I have slept very well.

The Mughal secret is as follows:

The secret is very simple, very short, and very easy everywhere and for everyone. Apply any oil, mustard or olive, etc. on the soles of the feet and the entire foot, especially for three minutes on the soles and three minutes on the soles of the right foot. Never forget to massage the soles of the feet at bedtime, and massage the children in the same way. Make it a routine for the rest of your life. Then look at the fullness of nature. You comb throughout your life. Why not apply oil on the soles of the feet?

According to ancient Chinese medicine, there are about 100 acupressure points under the feet. Human organs are also cured by pressing and massaging them. Him

HEALTH BENEFITS – By Listening to the MUSIC

New research shows music is good for your mood and health

It’s the weekend and at some point you’ll probably relax to your favourite music, watch a film with a catchy title track – or hit the dance floor.

There’s no doubt that listening to your favourite music can instantly put you in a good mood. But scientists are now discovering that music can do more for you than just lift your spirits.

Research is showing it has a variety of health benefits.

Fresh research from Austria has found that listening to music can help patients with chronic back pain.

And a recent survey by Mind – the mental health charity – found that after counselling, patients found group therapy such as art and music therapy, the most useful.

Here, we present six proven ways that music can help you and your family’s health

1. CHRONIC BACK PAIN

How it helps: Music works on the autonomic nervous system – the part of the nervous system responsible for controlling our blood pressure, heartbeat and brain function – and also the limbic system – the part of the brain that controls feelings and emotions. According to one piece of research, both these systems react sensitively to music.

When slow rhythms are played, our blood pressure and heartbeat slow down which helps us breathe more slowly, thus reducing muscle tension in our neck, shoulders, stomach and back. And experts say that apart from physical tension, music also reduces psychological tension in our mind.

In other words when we feel pain, we become frightened, frustrated and angry which makes us tense up hundreds of muscles in our back. Listening to music on a regular basis helps our bodies relax physically and mentally, thus helping to relieve – and prevent – back pain.

The research: A new study from Austria’s General Hospital of Salzburg due to be published in The Vienna Medical Weekly Journal could hold the key to back pain. In the study, 65 patients aged between 21 and 68 with chronic back pain after back surgery were divided into two groups.

One group received standard medical care and physiotherapy. The other group also listened to music and received visualization classes for 25 minutes every day for three weeks. Results found that the group who listened to music and used imagery experienced better pain relief than the group who did not.

Clinical psychologist Franz Wendtner who led the study says: ‘Music is an important part of our physical and emotional wellbeing – ever since we were babies in our mother’s womb listening to her heartbeat and breathing rhythms.

‘Listening to music for about 25 minutes everyday for at least ten days can help prevent back pain and also make you sleep better.’

Which type of music is best? Experts believe any type of classical music such as Mozart or Beethoven can help relieve muscle pain. Calm, slow music is also thought to help.

2. IMPROVES YOUR WORKOUT

How it helps: Experts say listening to music during exercise can give you a better workout in several ways. Scientists claim it can increase your endurance, boost your mood and can distract you from any discomfort experienced during your workout.

The research: Dr Robert Herdegen of America’s Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, looked at the effects of 12 men riding a bicycle for ten minutes while listening to music on one day. He compared it to the same men riding bicycles without music for ten minutes the following day.

On the days that the men exercised listening to music, they travelled 11 per cent further – compared to the days they didn’t listen to music. Researchers also found that the men’s levels of exertion were at their lowest when listening to music.

Other studies show that listening to music releases endorphins – our natural ‘feel good’ hormones that lift our mood and give us motivation to carry on longer with exercise.

Which type of music is best? The best type of music for exercise is thought to be high energy, high tempo music such as hip hop or dance music.

3. MEMORY LOSS

How it helps: For many people suffering from memory loss the spoken language has become meaningless. Music can help patients remember tunes or songs and get in touch with their history. This is because the part of the brain which processes music is located next to memory.

The research: Researchers from Norway’s Sogn OG Fjordane College compared the effects of live, taped and no music on three different groups of people suffering from post traumatic amnesia – or memory loss.

The patients were exposed to all three conditions, twice over six consecutive days. Results showed that when patients listened to live or taped music, two thirds of them showed significantly reduced symptoms of anxiety and enhanced orientation, compared to the group that didn’t listen to music.

Which type of music is best? Research shows that people with memory loss respond best to music of their choice.

Laughter – Benefits – Best Medicine

Laughter is part of the universal human vocabulary. All members of the human species understand it. Unlike English or French or Swahili, we don’t have to learn to speak it. We’re born with the capacity to laugh.

One of the remarkable things about laughter is that it occurs unconsciously. You don’t decide to do it. While we can consciously inhibit it, we don’t consciously produce laughter. That’s why it’s very hard to laugh on command or to fake laughter. (Don’t take my word for it: Ask a friend to laugh on the spot.)

Laughter provides powerful, uncensored insights into our unconscious. It simply bubbles up from within us in certain situations.

Very little is known about the specific brain mechanisms responsible for laughter. But we do know that laughter is triggered by many sensations and thoughts and that it activates many parts of the body.

When we laugh, we alter our facial expressions and make sounds. During exuberant laughter, the muscles of the arms, legs, and trunk are involved. Laughter also requires modification in our pattern of breathing.

We also know that laughter is a message that we send to other people. We know this because we rarely laugh when we are alone (we laugh to ourselves even less than we talk to ourselves).

Laughter is social and contagious. We laugh at the sound of laughter itself. That’s why the Tickle Me Elmo doll is such a success — it makes us laugh and smile.

The first laughter appears at about 3.5 to 4 months of age, long before we’re able to speak. Laughter, like crying, is a way for a preverbal infant to interact with the mother and other caregivers.

Contrary to folk wisdom, most laughter is not about humor; it is about relationships between people. To find out when and why people laugh, I and several undergraduate research assistants went to local malls and city sidewalks and recorded what happened just before people laughed. Over a 10-year period, we studied over 2,000 cases of naturally occurring laughter.

We found that most laughter does not follow jokes. People laugh at a variety of statements such as “Hey John, where ya been?” “Here comes Mary,” “How did you do on the test?” and “Do you have a rubber band?” These certainly aren’t jokes.

We don’t decide to laugh at these moments. Our brain makes the decision for us. These curious “ha ha ha’s” are bits of social glue that bond relationships.

Curiously, laughter seldom interrupts the sentence structure of speech. It punctuates speech. We only laugh during pauses when we would cough or breathe.
An evolutionary perspective

We believe laughter evolved from the panting behavior of our ancient primate ancestors. Today, if we tickle chimps or gorillas, they don’t laugh “ha ha ha” but exhibit a panting sound. That’s the sound of ape laughter. And it’s the root of human laughter.

Apes laugh in conditions in which human laughter is produced, like a tickle, rough and tumble play, and chasing games. Other animals produce vocalizations during play, but they are so different that it’s difficult to equate them with laughter. Rats, for example, produce high-pitch vocalizations during play and when tickled. But it’s very different in sound from human laughter.

When we laugh, we’re often communicating playful intent. So laughter has a bonding function within individuals in a group. It’s often positive, but it can be negative too. There’s a difference between “laughing with” and “laughing at.” People who laugh at others may be trying to force them to confirm or casting them out of the group.

No one has actually counted how much people of different ages laugh, but young children probably laugh the most. At ages 5 and 6, we tend to see the most exuberant laughs. Adults laugh less than children, probably because they play less. And laughter is associated with play.

We have learned a lot about when and why we laugh, much of it counter-intuitive. Work now underway will tell us more about the brain mechanisms of laughter, how laughter has evolved and why we’re so susceptible to tackle — one of the most enigmatic of human behaviors.

Robert Provine, Ph.D., is a professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. His book entitled “Laughter, A Scientific Investigation“, was published in 2001 by Penguin Press.

Meditation/Prayer – Benefits

Is your daily routine so busy and full of activities that it’s causing you stress and agitation? We’ve all heard of the health risks associated with too much stress, but how can you reduce that stress and find peace in your life?
To achieve a sense of peace, you can turn to the gift of prayer and meditation.

There are many benefits to meditation and prayer:

1. Stress reduction. Both meditation and prayer are wonderful for reducing stress. You’ll find that it helps you learn how to get away from the worries of life to a more peaceful state of mind. Just 15 minutes a day can make a huge difference by bringing peace and relaxation to your body and mind. A few minutes each day isn’t much, considering that the positive effects will last hours.

2. Improved health. Many studies have proven that prayer and meditation foster vibrant health. Usually these health benefits, such as lower blood pressure and decreased risk of heart disease, occur because of the lowered stress levels.
Physical problems are often a symptom of turmoil on the inside and prayer and meditation can help to overcome that turmoil.

3. Better control over your thoughts. Having negative thoughts from time to time is part of being human. Many people who are stressed don’t believe they’re able to control what they think. The stress mounts, tempers flair, and before long arguments ensue. However, by bringing prayer and meditation into your life, it’s possible to control your thoughts and stop negative thinking as soon as it happens. This helps keep your mind at peace.

4. Happiness. Both peace of mind and happiness are true benefits of meditation and prayer. Everyone is seeking happiness in their lives, and when you’re able to find peace of mind through prayer and meditation, you’re also welcoming happiness into your life. By spending some time in personal reflection, you’ll gain a greater wisdom of your mission in this life, and you’ll be better able to appreciate all that you’ve been given, both good and bad. Meditation and prayer help banish those negative thoughts that threaten your peace of mind.

5. Better concentration. As you pray and meditate, you welcome peace and tranquillity into your mind, which then affects how you live your life. When you alleviate the stresses in your life, you’re better able to concentrate on the things that are important, such as family or work. Continued prayer and meditation will help you expand your focus to multiple areas of your life.

Although prayer and meditation can provide peace in your life, it can be hard to make the time at first, but it’s easier than you think. Simply find a quiet place in your home and allow yourself to relax and feel at peace for 10-15 minutes. You deserve those 15 minutes of peace each day!

While there are plenty of positive benefits of prayer and meditation, it may take practice and perseverance to achieve them. Over time you’ll begin to experience this wonderful gift in your own life and you’ll be thankful that you did!
Here’s an excellent way to start enjoying the benefits of meditation today. The Deep Zen audio program is easy for anyone wanting to learn how to meditate and helps advanced mediators achieve deeper levels of meditation too.

The Golden Ladder of Giving
By Maimonides

  1. To give reluctantly,
the gift of the hand, but not of the heart.
  2. To give cheerfully,
but not in proportion to need.
  3. To give cheerfully and proportionately,
    but not until solicited.
  4. To give cheerfully, proportionately, and unsolicited,
but to put the gift into the poor person’s hand, thus creating shame.
  5. To give in such a way that the distressed may know their benefactor,
without being known to him or her.
  6. To know the objects of our bounty,
    but remain unknown to them.
  7. To give so that the benefactor may not know those whom he has relieved,
and they shall not know him.
  8. To prevent poverty by teaching a trade, setting a person up in business,
or in some other way preventing the needof charity.

About the Author – Maimonides (1135 -1204)
During the Middle Ages he was a Jewish rabbi, physican and philosopher While his words were written many years ago their wisdom can still apply today.

Success and Giving

By Catherine Pulsifer

What is success?

To some it is money; to others it is position; yet to others, it is power.

In developing your own definition of success, think of others and how you can help them.

If success means money to you,
then donate money to a worthwhile charity.

If success means a position of status,
then share your knowledge with others.

If success means power to you,
then use that to advance worthwhile causes.

All to often, we get caught up in all the things we want, and forget to give back to the world. Our society seems to place more value on how much we have rather than how much we give.

What a different world it would be if society placed more value on how much we gave!

The inspirational words of wisdom said by Martin Luther King, Jr.,
sums up our thought:

“We are prone to judge success by the index of our salaries
or the size of our automobile rather than by
the quality of our service and relationship to humanity.”

Giving is Fun

By Kenneth Irving Brown

If you believe in something,
you support it.

If you support something, the time comes when good wishes and cordial words are not enough and your hand reaches for your pocketbook.

Then the fun begins.
For giving is fun.

If you refuse to give, your support is wavering; and if your support is wavering, it can’t be that you believe in that something in any strong way.

Maybe our account books, after all, offer the honest list of those things in which we really believe.

More inspirational words of wisdom on giving:

Make all you can, save all you can, give all you can.
John Wesley

No person was ever honored for what he received.
He was honored for what he gave.
Calvin Coolidge

He who obtains has little. He who scatters has much.

The value of a man resides in what he gives
and not in what he is capable of receiving.

A recent study by Harvard Business School faculty and graduate students titled “Feeling Good about Giving: The Benefits (and Costs) of Self-Interested Charitable Behavior,” explores the ways in which charitable behavior can lead to benefits for the giver. While the concept that giving to others can make you feel good about yourself is not revolutionary, there are several more subtle ways that giving your money or time for a cause can benefit your psychological, spiritual and emotional well-being.

Here are five reasons to donate to charity

Based on the research of the Harvard Business School as well as other experts and websites.

Donations are tax deductible

When you donate to a charitable organization or a non-profit group, the amount you donate is tax deductible. But not only is the money you give tax deductible, so are the amounts you spend on travel, parking costs and even convention and event fees that are related to the non-profit group, as long as you are not being reimbursed by the charity for these expenses.

Giving to charity may improve your sense of well-being

The act of helping others can create an improved sense of well-being. Knowing that you sacrificed something such as time, finances or property in order to help others in need can give you a sense of purpose in life or work and inner satisfaction.

Supporting a cause can help keep you informed about issues of social injustice

When considering donating to a charity, many people tend to research the issues connected to that organization. As a result, you become more educated about social injustices around the world. You may discover new points of view and opinions on topics about which you were previously uniformed. This knowledge may position you to help increase the awareness of social problems among those in your sphere of influence from a balanced and educated standpoint.

Giving to charity out of spiritual conviction can strengthen your spiritual life

Selfless giving is a key component to many spiritual and religious belief systems. Recognizing that you have taken action in line with your spiritual beliefs by offering your resources to others in need can bring a sense of inner peace and contentment.

Volunteering with a charity may result in physical and social benefits

After donating financially to a charity or non-profit organization, you may feel an inner pull to become more involved with the cause by donating your time and skill as well. By volunteering, you have the opportunity to build your social circles while reaping the physical, mental and spiritual benefits from the labor you contribute to your favourite cause.

This exposes children to both aspects of life, successes and failures. Sports build a competitive spirit in children and teach them to be participative irrespective of whether the result is victory or defeat. The most important benefit of sports is the sportsman spirit they inculcate. Sports help you become more sporting, more positive and stronger.

Sports foster collective thinking and harness your planning and delegation skills too. Sports build confidence. Winning a game gives you a sense of accomplishment, which boosts your confidence further.

Playing sports involves directed thinking. It requires you to strategize. You need to devise ways to score goals, runs or earn points, as the case may be. This definitely involves clever thinking, which sports encourage. Studies show that kids who play sports regularly fare well in academics and do well in school.

Sports make you happy. I know anyone would agree with this. When sports are played at the state or national level, they increase the players’ sense of belonging to their community or country. International sports events foster patriotism and a feeling of oneness among the team members of a country. Playing sports at these levels opens many employment avenues for not only sportsmen and women but also people who join tournaments as volunteers, cheerleaders or in the capacity of sports doctors and physical therapists. As developments are undertaken in cities hosting sports events, sports can lead to urbanization of rural areas. Many cities have started becoming hubs for sports tourism. Sports parks are being developed in many tourist destinations. It is the increasing inclination for playing sports which is responsible for such developments.

Playing sports reduces several health risks. As sports serve as an excellent form of exercise, it won’t come as a surprise that they offer health benefits like lowering blood pressure, maintaining blood sugar and cholesterol levels and reducing other health risks. Yes, if you are playing a sport regularly, you are at a lesser risk of developing diabetes or heart diseases. Playing sports reduces the risk of hypertension and several other stress-related disorders. Research shows that people who play sports regularly can deal with stresses and strains in a better way. Here are some of the many benefits of a smile:Benefits of a smile: A healthier immune system

Various studies conducted over the years have shown that smiling and laughter can boost the functioning of the immune system. This may help to reduce your risk of developing everything from the common cold to chronic diseases such as cancer. Could there be a less expensive medicine than this?
Benefits of a smile: Helps to relieve stress
Smiling and laughter helps to promote release of a “feel good” group of hormones calledendorphins. These are the same group of hormones responsible for the runners high you hear so much about. If you don’t have time to get to the gym for a hard run, try adding a smile and a bit of laughter to boost these natural, stress relieving hormones.
Benefits of a smile: A smile is beautiful

Why do American spend thousands of dollars on makeup and cosmetic procedures to look more attractive and then walk around with a scowl on their faces? The most beautiful face in the world won’t be pleasing with down turned lips and a sour expression. In contrast, a plain face can be transformed by the power of a smile. If you want to look better, try adding a genuine smile.
Benefits of a smile: A smile inspires others
When you smile at a stranger you not only boost your own health and beauty, you also send a positive messagethat can potentially change someone else’s mood for the better. The stranger you graced with your smile may go on to pass the kindness to someone else. Who knows how far your original smile will travel?
Benefits of a smile: Smiling canincrease your chances for success
When you smile, you appear confident and capable. Given the choice between two equally qualified job candidates, the smiling candidate is going to be perceived as being more of a team player and easier to workwith. Who do you think is more likely to get the job offer?
The next time you’re tempted to face the world with a frown, remember another old quotation. “It takes seventeen muscles to smile and forty-three to frown”.
When you smile, you appear confident and capable. Given the choice between two equally qualified job candidates, the smiling candidate is going to be perceived as being more of a team player and easier to work with. Who do you think is more likely to get the job offer?

Smile! The Remarkable Personal Benefits of Smiling by SixWise.comThere may be more to the song “Put on a Happy Face” than just a catchy tune-putting on a happy face is actually good for you, and those around you. Now there’s a reason to smile.
Smile Your Way to a Better Future

Researchers of a study led by Dr. Dacher Keltner of the University of California were able to predict the future success (30 years down the road!) of 21-year-old women just by looking at their photographs. The key appeared to be the intensity of the women’s smiles.

“Women who displayed more positive emotion were more likely to be married by 27, less likely to have remained single into middle adulthood and more likely to have satisfying marriages 30 years later. This means we can take photos at a wedding and from them we may be able to tell how the marriage will go,” said Dr. Keltner.

How intense a woman smiled was related to personality tests and psychologists ranked the women by how they expressed emotions like joy and happiness. How did they know the smiles weren’t being faked? They used computer technology to measure 44 aspects of facial activity. If a smile were not genuine, certain muscles would not move (for instance, certain muscles around the eyes that we don’t consciously control move when we feel emotion).
Be Happy: Fight Illness Better
People who are optimistic (and these are the people who are out there smiling!) have stronger immune systems and are actually able to fight off illness better than pessimists.

Need a Quick Laugh?

The new employee stood before the paper shredder looking confused.

“Need some help?” a secretary walking by asked.

“Yes,” he replied, “How does this thing work?”

“Simple,” she said, taking the fat report from his hand and feeding it into the shredder.

“Thanks,” he said, “but where do the copies come out?”

“The research is very clear,” says Christopher Peterson, Ph.D, a University of Michigan professor who’s been studying optimism’s link to health for over two decades, “This is not some social science generalization. There is a link between optimistic attitudes and good health. It has been measured in a variety of ways. Overall, we have found that optimistic people are healthier. Their biological makeup is different. They have a more robust immune system.”

A Joke to Get You Smiling, Little Johnny’s kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local policestation where they saw pictures, tacked to a bulletin board, of the 10 most-wanted criminals. One of theyoungsters pointed to a picture and asked if itreally was the photo of a wanted person. “Yes,” said the policeman. “The detectives want very badly to capture him.” Little Johnny asked, “Why didn’t you keep him when you took his picture?”

It also appears that people who are optimistic are more likely to take care of themselves, which may be another reason why they tend to be healthier. Says Peterson, “Optimistic people act differently … [and] are more likely to do the things that public health experts say are associated with good health. Generally speaking, they eat sensibly, they don’t drink senselessly, they exercise and they get their sleep.”

Smile: You’ll Live Longer
According to a study published in the November 2004 issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry, elderly optimistic people, those who expected good things to happen (rather than bad things), were less likely to die than pessimists.
In fact, among the 65- to 85-year-old study participants, those who were most optimistic were 55 percent less likely to die from all causes than the most pessimistic people. What’s more, after researchers adjusted the results for age, smoking status, alcohol consumption, physical activity and other measures of health, the optimists were 71 percent less likely to die than the pessimists!
Smiling Feels Like Eating 2,000 Chocolate Bars

That’s right-according to The British Dental Health Foundation, a smile gives the same level of stimulation as eating 2,000 chocolate bars. The results were found after researchers measured brain and heart activity in volunteers as they were shown pictures of smiling people and given money and chocolate.
Dr. Nigel Carter, chief executive of the Foundation, pointed out, “We have long been drawing attention to the fact that smiling increases happiness both in yourself and those around you, so it is good to receive the backing of this scientific research … A healthy smile can improve your confidence, help you make friends and help you to succeed in your career … ”

A Little More Smile Motivation … A driver tucked this note under the windshield wiper of his automobile: “I’ve circled the block for 20 minutes. I’m late for an appointment, and if I don’t park here I’ll lose my job. Forgive us our trespasses.”
When he came back he found a parking ticket and this note: “I’ve circled the block for 20 years, and if I don’t give you a ticket, I’ll lose my job. Lead us not into temptation.”

Smiling is Contagious
What’s even better is that the more you smile, the more others will too. Says psychologist Dr. David Lewis, “Seeing a smile creates what is termed as a ‘halo’ effect, helping us to remember other happy events more vividly, feel more optimistic, more positive and more motivated.”
So what are you waiting for? Go ahead … Smile!

The Benefits of a Beautiful Smile

No one can disregard the importance of having a beautiful smile.

According to one survey sponsored by a fashion magazine, 92% of Americans believes that one of the most important features of their body is their stunning smile. rhythm cardiac and reduce tension

It is reflected to the rise of cosmetic dentistry procedures over the last 8 years. This figure can be interpreted in 2 different ways: either the procedures have become more accessible to many people or there is a growing concern over the aesthetics of their teeth. But whichever way, Americans have become more conscious and begin to place more importance on the appearance of their smiles as well as their dental health.

This is not only limited to the Western culture. Even in other parts of the world particularly Europe, Asia and Australia, there has been a steady increase in cosmetic dentistry procedures. This is because even if different cultures perceive beauty differently, most rely on physical appearance to determine how good the person is. There is nothing wrong with it. In fact, taking care of your physical appearance as well as dental appearance improves your overall well-being, which includes self-confidence and self-esteem.

A beautiful smile, therefore, develops your self-esteem and self-confidence. This is perhaps the most significant change you can experience. Since you are no longer conscious about the condition of your teeth, you can proudly show your beautiful set of teeth when you smile and laugh. And because you are more confident to face others, you can create a better first impression, whether to attract the opposite sex or to stay within the social scene.

Self-esteem and self-confidence are the measurement of your self-worth. If you possess the two, you can see your life in a much better perspective and extend yourself to a much larger group of people. Your personality and attitude determine how others see you, so when you treat yourself with high-self worth others will notice.

Smiling makes you feel better

A happy smile brings about a better-feeling mood. You can experiment yourself. Put a smile on your face (even if you don’t feel like smiling) and try to keep smiling for about a minute. See if your mood shifts up a notch towards more happiness.
The muscles used in smiling seem to have that real effect. This means that even if you’re not feeling too cheerful you can still ‘fake’ a smile for a short while and you will actually start to feel better.

Smiling reduces blood pressure

Research has shown that smiling brings about a definite and measurable reduction in blood pressure. And high blood pressure is a major health risk factor in these modern times.
If you don’t believe this, the next time you’re having your blood pressure checked, ask the doctor or health professional to let you smile for a minute or two after the first reading, and then take a second reading and see if it’s the same or lower than the first one.

Smiling boosts the immune system

The immune system is what helps you stay healthy and ward off colds, flu and other illnesses. If you smile a lot you can expect your body’s immune system to benefit, reducing your chances of getting ailments.
So, this is another reason why deliberately and frequently offering a smile can be of benefit to health and happiness.

Smiling reduces the feeling of stress overload

When I was a member of the Humewood Sea Scout Troop in the nineteen fifties, the ten-point Scout Law included as its eighth point:
“A Scout smiles and whistles under all difficulties.”
I guess Lord Robert Baden-Powell of Gilwell knew a thing or two when he put pen to paper to draw up the Scout Law for boys between the ages of 11 and 18.
The next time you’re feeling a bit ‘low’, overwhelmed, tired, despondent, just decide to offer a smile.
Hold it for just over a minute or so, and see how it changes your ‘vibrations’ and improves how you feel emotionally. Repeat the process again, and you should find that your mood lifts even more.
Smiling is an excellent method for uplifting one’s mood and energy, as well as one’s effectiveness in the task at hand. Try it yourself.

Smiling releases ‘happy chemicals’

A happy smile, whether you’re actually feeling happy at the time or not, releases endorphins, serotonin and other biochemical substances in the body.

Working in harmony, the effect of these changes in body chemistry is that we quickly start to feel happier. So, offering a smile at any time will clearly uplift one’s mood and cultivate a more frequent state of happiness.

Here’s some smiling homework

Take advantage of this knowledge and make it a point to practise giving a happy smile whenever you can.

Here are some suggestions for you to try for yourself:

A Happy Smile Brings Some Definite Benefits

Prayer Regularly

Reasons Prayer Can Be so Powerful

The power of prayer can be seen from moment to moment throughout our daily lives. God asks us to pray over everything. He does this because he wants to be part of our lives, he does this because he knows that if we just ask he can help us – “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:” Matthew 7:7 (KJV)

We pray for understand

Let’s face it, sometimes we just don’t get it. We do not understand why something is happening or what to do next. We have all had these moments of complete confusion. Prayer can help to eliminate some, if not all, of that confusion. When we turn to God with what we do not understand he will find a way to show us what it means and why things have happened. When we pray daily for understanding we find ourselves accepting the things that, before, would have worried us. We will continue to grow in our understanding of God’s plan for our life and in the bigger picture of what God desires of the world he created.

We pray for knowledge

Understanding is one thing, but knowing is a whole new game. God mentions his desire for us to gain knowledge, but for so many of us we have never fully understood what that meant. Is it knowledge of future events? Is it book-smarts, or common sense? Honestly, it encompasses all of these. He wants us improve our minds with knowledge of the world, how things works and what is going on around us. And he wants us to think before we act, to make sure a choice we make is not going to lead us down a road of temptation. When we pray we ask for future guidance and God gives it to us. We listen for him to lead us and when we hear it, we know what path we are meant to take; we know what is right and what God desires for our future.

We pray for clarity

There are so many choices in life. College students will often change majors twice before they graduate moving on only to change careers several more times as the years pass. Decisions always seem to be difficult to make. Prayer brings us clarity. God removes the fog around the paths in our life, showing us a clear road ahead, and a goal in sight. The more we pray the clearer things become and the more often a decision does not even have to be made; we automatically know where to go or what to do.

We pray to build faith

Now faith is hard. God knows that and understands it often takes time for our faith to grow. He knows that is one of the wonderful things about prayer and its relationship with faith. The more we pray and see God answer those prayers the more faith we have in God. It is not about seeing it to believe it. That, by definition, is not faith at all. It is about seeing the extent to which God works. In our mere mortal minds we cannot grasp the concept of the doing the impossible or making something happen without limits. God can do both of these and it takes time to see that God can truly do anything. It takes braking these barriers in our minds -about what can and can’t be done – that allow us to find faith in God and in our life with Him beside us.

We pray for healing

God can heal us. He heals our hearts, our minds, our souls, and yes, even our physical being. Sometimes this can be hard for us. Often we do not realize how deep our wounds are until we ask God to stop the pain they cause and suture them up. Half of what God does for us is heal what has been broken, what evil has done to our emotions and what everyday life does to the body. It takes this healing for us to come to know God better, to understand why God loves us so fiercely and why we should love ourselves for who we are. Prayers for healing are the most sought after and easily answered prayers. All one has to do is let God in and he will heal fully with the lightest of touch.

We pray for wisdom

Wisdom is sort of the next step up from knowledge. You gain knowledge through studying and through what God shows, but wisdom is adding understanding to that knowledge, seeing it with complete clarity and, above all, imparting that wisdom onto others. It is observation really. Through your prayers God imparts this wisdom to you. He brings forth the tools you need to grow in your skills, common sense, book-smarts and emotions. It is what you know about him and the world he created, the changes it has been through and what will happen to it eventually. Our wisdom grows through prayer as we learn to listen and see the things God has to show us, the things that will improve each and every moment of our lives.

Prayer brings us growth

This may seem obvious after all that has been said up to now. Still, it is an important point. Without prayer we have no way to talk to God, to be with God on an intimate level. Without prayer we have limited knowledge and understanding and therefore cannot grow. It is about so much more than understanding or even wisdom. We seek growth in every facet of our lives. We grow in strength, understand, love, faith, joy, acceptance, knowledge and our life with God. Prayer is there to aid us. With a direct connection to God we can find the paths he wants for us, learn the things he wishes to teach, and truly know him. Everything we never realized we desired can be found in those moments we talk to God.

In Prayer we find humility

Judgment comes so easy to a human being. When we see the life we have and know the things we know it can be so easy for evil to slip in and take hold. We know a better life with God and what is good and what is bad. So easy it is to cross the invisible line between helping others to do the right thing and judging others for doing the wrong one. In our prayers God humbles us, showing us the mistakes, we too, make each day. He reminds us that no human soul is perfect, lest it be His son Jesus Christ, which too reminds us that it has the potential. Through our prayers God shows us that the path to becoming Christ-like is not through a list of do’s and don’ts, but through love, the love God has for his people, the love Jesus carried as he walked this earth, the love without which, he could never have given his life in order to save ours. Prayer in asking forgiveness will always be a reminder of this will always fill your heart with that love. That love will pour out to others, no matter the individual and we will find humility in equality, in knowing that we too have sinned.

Prayer gives us strength

There is no doubt about it, we find our strength in God, and we find God through our prayers. Life is tough, and it seems the tiniest thing can bring our world crashing down, wondering how we will ever be able make it right again; wondering where will find the strength to even bother. Things are always stronger if there is more than one; the fusion of one molecule to another allows them to share electrons, making the composition stronger and harder to break apart. Through this process we have one of the greatest elements of life – H2O, more commonly known as water. Water is life. It finds its strength in that sharing of electrons. We are weak without being part of God – without sharing with God our worries, fears, joys, plans, ideas, and even our past. Talking with God about anything strengthens our bond to him, strengthening us to make it through the trials and tribulations of life.

Above all it builds our Relationship with God

Above all prayer allows us to know God. A relationship cannot be built without communication. Prayer is so much more than asking God for something, thanking him for what he has given us and worshiping him (though these things are important parts of prayer.) It is really about talking to him; letting him know what you think and feel, while at the same time stopping to listen to what he has to say. Sometimes he is silent, asking us to take a leap of faith to grow in our relationship with him, while at others he will show you every step he desires you to take. You even have the right to choose your own path, to do what you feel you should do, not what you think he wants you to. While this is not recommended, seeing as it will probably weaken your relationship, the point is that you have a choice, this is a real, true blue relationship. Prayer is your way to talk to God, ask him for the things you desire, ask his opinion and be there for him as much as he is there for you.

And one to grow on
Improve Our Outlook on Life. While the above mentioned befits are all important to know, it is also important that we understand the emotional benefits as well. When we draw close to God in any way we find a greater joy and happiness in life. Prayer is a way to work out all those little problems; to hand them over to God and let him deal with them while we go out and live our lives. Prayer will bring you pleasure by giving you a greater understanding of life, love God, and the connection between all three.

Tithe Submission

No one likes to think about tithing when it comes to God and His church.  If most of us were honest, we would admit that it is far easier to pray, sing God’s praises and help others than it is to turn over 10% of everything we earn to the Lord.  Yet God blesses those who tithe, and it is one of the most basic Biblical tests of our faithfulness and stewardship.  In fact, the word “tithe” actually means “tenth.”

We are so often thinking about all of your own needs that we put tithing last on our list and tell ourselves, “If I had anything left over, I would certainly give my ten percent, but I never have anything left.”  But if you tithed first by setting aside your ten percent for God before paying the bills, you would be surprised to find that you can give your ten percent.  You would simply have less for things you don’t really need.  And here’s the best part – God will reward you for your faithfulness!

God wants to bless us, but it is difficult to trust us with riches on earth when we won’t share our blessings.

In Luke 16:11, Jesus said,

“…if you have not been faithful in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?”

As a church, we are trying to further God’s kingdom here on earth and bring the comfort of the Lord to other’s lives.  Have we saved the world?  No.  Have we comforted everyone?  No.  Have we abolished need?  No.  The Lord asks that we “put our money where our mouths are.”  To give back 10% of what we have to try and reach that place where no one is in need.

And yet, God is a loving God.  He has not asked us for everythingwe have.  He knows we have to feed our own children and put a roof over our heads.  He even knows we have to pay the IRS!  He said, “Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s.”  The IRS is today’s equivalent of Caesar!  God hasn’t ignored the realities of living in today’s world.  He doesn’t ask for all of it, or even most of it.  Not even one quarter of it!  Just one tenth.  But it still sounds like a lot, doesn’t it?  So how do we give up one tenth of what we earn and not ruin ourselves financially?

Well, we turn over so much to God – our cares, our concerns, our personal problems and our health issues.  We say, “Dear Lord, heal my friend.”  But God is not a doctor.  We say, “Jesus, help my spouse and I to get our marriage back on track.”  But God isn’t Doctor Phil.  But how many of us have said, “God, guide me in my financial decisions.  Help me live and work in order to return to you as much as I can for your work here on earth?”

We pray for health, we pray for guidance, we pray for comfort.  Why not turn our financial concerns – and our money – over to God?  Why not give back a mere slice of what God gives us back to Him?  And it is all His, isn’t it?

Part of the problem is giving up control.  When we tithe, we don’t know how the money will be used, so we hesitate to hand over our money.  But when there is a fundraiser for something specific – a new bell tower at the church, to help a family we know, or for a particular charity – we always find a way to give.  Why wait?  Aren’t there always people in need?  Ministries to be served?  Missionaries without funding?

If each and every one of us tithed freely to God, no fundraisers would be needed!  There would be plenty to go around!  As Americans, we don’t realize how truly God has blessed us financially.  We say, “Lord, it is hard to tithe.”  But it shouldn’t be, particularly when we have been blessed by God.  Because with our success comes the responsibility to use it wisely to help others and further God’s kingdom.

It is easy to forget that our success comes from God’s grace.  He has blessed us with so many things – shouldn’t we thank Him by using our blessings in ways that would gladden His heart?

Tithing ensures that our needs will be met and gives back to God what was always His.  God is honored when we are faithful. When we acknowledge that God is the true owner and giver of all that we have, we will be rewarded in countless ways.

Ken Blanchard, the author of The One Minute Manager, said, “I absolutely believe in the Power of Tithing and giving back.  My own experience about all the blessings I’ve had in my life is that the more I give away, the more comes back.  That is the way life works, and that is the way energy works.”

“…they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God’s will… just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us – see that you also excel in this grace of giving.”

– 2 Corinthians 8:1-8

So the next time you think about giving to God, remember that all of your blessings came from Him, and give back your ten percent with a happy heart.  He gives us so much and asks for so little!

The value of paying tithing
Many people know the value tithing brings. In addition to a number of benefits and blessings, it also helps to increase faith and show obedience. What is tithing?
The concept of tithing goes back to biblical days, where it states in the book of Malachi, “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” As such, it is not a new concept, nor is it limited to the LDS faith alone.
Those who pay a full tithe pay 10% of their annual increase. Tithing is used for a number of the Lord’s purposes, including building and maintaining church meetinghouses and temples, educating Church members through such programs as the Perpetual Education Fund, and missionary work, to name a few. When you pay your tithing, you give it to a member of the Bishopric in your home ward. From there, he records the amounts and sends the funds directly to the headquarters of the church. A council comprised of the First Presidency, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, and the Presiding Bishopric determine how and what to use the tithing funds for.The value of paying tithing
While some may look upon paying tithing as a burden or an unnecessary expense, they should consider what exactly they are giving up in terms of value by not paying tithes.
Uandment to pay tithing show their obedience to this principle.
Trust. Those who pay tithing have been promised a number of blessings, both temporal and spiritual, and paying tithing illustrates trust in these blessings.
Love. Paying tithing not only indicates love to the Lord by following his commandments and acknowledging his hand in all things, but to other members of the Church who tithing helps.
Those who pay tithing are promised with a number of things. Many members of the church will tell of times they were faced with the decision to pay tithing or pay a bill, or either pay tithing or not have enough money for groceries. Those who paid their tithing when they didn’t think they could afford it tell of being blessed with a number of things, including finding money, having friends or ward members bring them a meal, or getting a better job offer. Such illustrations of the blessings of tithing are not difficult to come by; virtually every faithful tithe payer can think of an instance where their faith has been rewarded from paying tithing. The value of tithing goes beyond monetary rewards as well. Those who faithfully pay their tithing experience an increase in faith as a result of their obedience and willingness. As such, their strength and resolve in the Church grows. Not to mention they get a tax write off for tithes paid.

Some people find the concept of paying tithing difficult to follow. However, the Lord through his prophets has challenged those to pay their tithing and, as a result, see firsthand the blessings and value that come from paying tithing.

An Inspirational Poem for Mother’s Day

By: Nicola Kennedy

If you are looking for an inspirational poem that shows an understanding of what a mom has to deal with, this is the one. Every mom, young or old, knows this by heart and can only hope that her children will understand when they grow up.

“You don’t love me!” How many times have your kids laid that one on you? And how many times have you, as a parent, resisted the urge to tell them how much? Someday, when my children are old enough to understand the logic that motivates a mother, I will tell them.

A MOTHER’S LOVE GOES DEEP

I loved you enough to insist you buy a bike with your own money that we could afford and you couldn’t.
I loved you enough to be silent and let you discover your handpicked friend was a creep;
I loved you enough to stand over you for two hours while you cleaned your bedroom, a job that would have taken me fifteen minutes.
I loved you enough to say, “Yes, you may go to Disney World on Mother’s Day.”
I loved you enough to let you see anger, disappointment, mistrust and tears in my eyes.
I loved you enough not to make excuses for your lack of respect or you bad manners.
I loved you enough to admit that I was wrong and ask your forgiveness.
I loved you enough to ignore “what every other mother” did or said.
I loved you enough to let you stumble, fall, hurt and fail.
I loved you enough to let you assume the responsibility for your own actions, at 6, 10, and 16.
I loved you enough to figure you would lie about the party being chaperoned but forgave you for it after discovering I was right.
I loved you enough to shove you off my lap, let go of your hand, be mute to your pleas and insensitive to your demands…so that you had to stand alone.
I loved you enough to accept you for what you are, not what I wanted you to be.

But most of all, I loved you enough to say “no” when you hated me for it.

THAT WAS THE HARDEST PART OF ALL.

Prayers – New Moon

Inspired by Farmers’ Almanacs

When I began writing this blog, I decided to call it an almanac instead of a referring to it as a diary or journal. The term almanac seemed to me more appropriate for what I wanted to say. The Farmers’ Almanacs are a source of folk wisdom that has been published in the U.S. continually for about two centuries. Many people, over the years, strongly believed in and have been helped by following the recommendations of farmers’ almanacs. So, that was part of my inspiration. While I never imagined that what I had to say would become widely popular, I hoped that the pages of my blog would reflect traditional wisdom and be helpful to a small group of people including, of course, my family and friends.
There is a lot to be learned in the Farmers’ Almanacs. One of the main points in these publications is detailed weather prediction that is printed for at least a year in advance. The sun and planetary movements, as well as phases of the moon guide these predictions. The almanacs also tell people the dates when to plant crops and when to harvest, as well as the best timing for starting up many other human activities. (See note below.)

The new moon offers opportunities

The lunar month is one of the most important aspects of our planet because it represents a regular cycle of greater and lesser gravitational attraction between the earth and the moon. The lunar cycle is 29.3 days long, and the lunar calendar has thirteen “moonths”, plus one extra day to harmonize with the 365-day solar calendar.  Besides having a daily rythym of high and low tides, the lunar cycles also affect the tides. We have highest tides on new moon and full moon days and lowest tides when the moon is in the 1st quarter and last quarter.
According to the farmers’ almanacs, the new moon offers opportunities for making changes and initiating new projects. The new moon is a time for promoting all forms of growth, including planting crops, business opportunities, relationships, as well as creative and spiritual endeavors.
We become more attuned with our own aims and possibilities, when we are aware of the geo-magnetic and psychic energy available to us in different moments according to the lunar cycle. For the same reason, many spiritual traditions, including that of Native Americans, yogis and others, have special practices during the new moon. Their traditions point to these days as very favorable times to carry out certain spiritual rituals and other intentions.

Fasting and the new moon

Short periods of not eating offer a way of cleansing the body and preparing the mind for greater focus. When you fast, your body takes a rest and healing occurs. A lot of people who regularly fast say that their days of fasting help them see things more clearly and with a new perspective.

The Christian tradition also calls for fasting, and is rooted in the words of Jesus: “All things will be possible for you. That kind of spirit comes out only if you use prayer and fasting.” (Matthew:17:20-21)
Fasting gives you an opportunity to live your day in a different way – with greater reflection — a time for peace of body and spirit, and a closer connection to your Creator. Your fast will be even more pleasant if you spend at least part of your day outdoors, walking in nature, creating art, writing in your personal journal, listening to inspiring music, or doing devotional reading.

When you fast during the new moon, you receive important benefits. Fasting on that day greatly increases your energy and boosts your health. Yogis don’t do their regular yoga practice during the new moon, but instead maintain a fast and use the day for quiet walks, meditation, and prayer. This is a wonderful way they have of connecting with the Divine.

So, my recommendation to you is to try new moon fasting and feel its benefits for yourself. This fast is usually for 24 hours. Start your fast in the morning and end it with a light breakfast on the following morning. If you’re new to fasting, try to plan as calm a day as possible. Be sure to allow yourself some quiet time or a leisurely nap in the afternoon — if you can manage it.
You may fast in different ways. The usual ways are by drinking water with lemon juice or drinking vegetable and fruit juices, diluted with about 50% water. You may drink as much as you like. The important thing is to not chew anything during the day and don’t drink any coffee or black tea. If — and only if — there is a lot of hunger in the late afternoon or evening, you can drink a fruit smoothie with a little yogurt.

Note: You can see the date of the new moon in the coming “month” and other info from Farmers’ Almanac in Grandmas’ Almanac Calendar.

Music – Benefits

Dates (Fruit)

Dates have recently become the healthier alternative to chocolate. In shops, we can now buy different varieties of date – from dried and plain to stone and glazed with pure sugar. The date itself is very nutritious but added Glucose is never a good thing. If you want to benefit most from this fruit, choose the purest and natural version you can find. Sweetened dates will still have the benefits but also might carry disadvantages which are related to the overconsumption of sugar.

Dates originate from the Middle East and grow on palm trees. There are different types of date species cultivated which vary in size, color, and nutritional components.

Dates are made out of simple sugars, some starch, and cellulose. When ripening the simple sugar content increases and fiber concentration decreases. You can find more on fiber in the benefits of eating carrots. Dieters have recognized this property and commonly use it for enforcing weight loss. Dietary fiber also might prevent abdominal cancer.

Even though dates are fruit they still contain small amounts of fatty acids, both saturated and unsaturated. There has been spotted an opportunity to use dates as a source of oleic acid which can be found in the seeds of dates. Also found in the olive oil, it has a lowering effect on the blood pressure and cholesterol levels.  The problem would be though to ensure the digestion of these seeds to get any benefits at all.

There 15 different minerals present from which some tend to decrease in concentrations in later stages of date development depending on variety – Iron, Zinc, Magnesium, Sodium, Potassium and Phosphorus. This is another reason to eat more ‘young’ dates. Iron enhances the production of blood and dates are advantageous for people with Iron deficiency as the use of supplements can be avoided. Potassium is essential for a healthy nervous system and enhances physical activity too. On other hands, Phosphorus is the building bone of genetic material in the body. It also is the part of the ATP (adenosine triphosphate) which is the energy fuel for all reactions in all living things. Lack of phosphorus might cause muscular and neurological dysfunction and disruption of blood cells. It is also beneficial for hardening the bones. Dates have 5 times larger concentration of these three minerals than bananas and apples.

Protein

Dates are also very rich in Protein, again 5 times more than other fruit. There are 23 different amino acids in dates from which most are not available in other conventional fruits at all. The concentration of these again decreases with ripening. Proteins are the building blocks of our body and are needed for the growth of muscles. Therefore, people who want to widen the range and type of protein they intake, dates are a great option.  In the largest concentrations of protein in dates are Glutamic, Aspartic and Aspartame amino acids. Glutamic acid is an essential neurotransmitter which mediates different metabolic reactions and as a supplement is widely used by athletes.

Vitamins

Different vitamins are also present but not in great amounts. You would have eaten a lot of dates to reach the daily recommendation. The most significant amount of concentrations have vitamin C(Ascorbic acid), B1(Thiamine) and B2(Riboflavin) but there is also a presence of Folic acid, Nicotinic Acid, and vitamin A. Vitamin C mediates metabolism, is an antioxidant, detoxifier and has been claimed to boost the immune system. B1 has been associated with increased mental activity but B2 has been used for prevention of migraines.

Benefits of eating dates:

  • Increase of energy
  • Enhance bowel movement
  • Prevent abdominal cancer
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Lower Blood pressure
  • Enhance metabolism and absorption of nutrients
  • Enhance physical activity
  • Prevent neurological problems
  • Enhance blood production
  • Contribute to muscle growth
  • Might boost immune system
  • Prevent migraines and other physical pain

Turmeric

The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. Tumeric has been used for over 2500 years in India, where it was most likely first used as a dye.

The medicinal properties of this spice have been slowly revealing themselves over the centuries. Long known for its anti-inflammatory properties, recent research has revealed that turmeric is a natural wonder, proving beneficial in the treatment of many different health conditions from cancer to Alzheimer’s disease.

Here are 20 reasons to add turmeric to your diet:

  1.  It is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent, useful in disinfecting cuts and burns.
  2.  When combined with cauliflower, it has shown to prevent prostate cancer and stop the growth of existing prostate cancer.
  3.  Prevented breast cancer from spreading to the lungs in mice.
  4.  May prevent melanoma and cause existing melanoma cells to commit suicide.
  5.  Reduces the risk of childhood leukemia.
  6.  Is a natural liver detoxifier.
  7.  May prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease by removing amyloid plaque buildup in the brain.
  8.  May prevent metastases from occurring in many different forms of cancer.
  9.  It is a potent natural anti-inflammatory that works as well as many anti-inflammatory drugs but without the side effects.
  10.  Has shown promise in slowing the progression of multiple sclerosis in mice.
  11.  Is a natural painkiller and cox-2 inhibitor.
  12.  May aid in fat metabolism and help in weight management.
  13.  Has long been used in Chinese medicine as a treatment for depression.
  14. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it is a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
  15.  Boosts the effects of chemo drug paclitaxel and reduces its side effects.
  16.  Promising studies are underway on the effects of turmeric on pancreatic cancer.
  17.  Studies are ongoing in the positive effects of turmeric on multiple myeloma.
  18.  Has been shown to stop the growth of new blood vessels in tumors.
  19.  Speeds up wound healing and assists in remodeling of damaged skin.
  20.  May help in the treatment of psoriasis and other inflammatory skin conditions.

Turmeric can be taken in powder or pill form. It is available in pill form in most health food stores, usually in 250-500mg capsules.

Once you start using turmeric on a regular basis, it’s fun to find new ways to use it in recipes. My favorite way to use it is to add a pinch of it to egg salad. It adds a nice flavor and gives the egg salad a rich yellow hue.
Contraindications: Turmeric should not be used by people with gallstones or bile obstruction. Though turmeric is often used by pregnant women, it is important to consult with a doctor before doing so as turmeric can be a uterine stimulant.

Benefits of Using Turmeric in Cooking

August 27, 2010

The Benefits of turmeric are many. The peppery, golden spice has been used for thousands of years throughout India and China. Turmeric is also known as Indian saffron because of its similar hue.  Although originally used as a dye, it was soon discovered that turmeric had many healing properties. Today, the spice is used in mustards and curies as much for its yellow color as for its warm and earthy flavor.
The health benefits of turmeric are due to its primary active ingredient, curcumin. Curcumin is also the compound that gives turmeric its vivid yellow color. There are so many health benefits attributed to the use of turmeric; it’s definitely worth it to try to incorporate this spice into your diet. The following are just some of the many health benefits of turmeric.

Antioxidant Properties

Turmeric has strong antioxidant properties. Consuming turmeric on a regular basis can help prevent free radical damage associated with premature aging, heart disease, Alzheimer’s and other degenerative diseases. Indian populations have a fraction of the incidences of Alzheimer’s disease than Americans do. Traditional Indian diets are rich in curry based dishes. It’s thought that the turmeric in their curry dishes is at least partially responsible for the low incidences of Alzheimer’s in India.

Anti-inflammatory Properties

Turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory. The active ingredient curcumin has been shown in several studies to be as effective as many prescription and over the counter anti-inflammatory drugs. And unlike traditional medications, curcumin is nontoxic. Many sufferers of rheumatoid arthritis have found relief from painful joint pain by adding turmeric to their diets.

Anti-tumor Properties

Regular use of turmeric is associated with lower risks of lung, breast, prostate and colon cancers. A recent study concluded that turmeric may also slow the spread of existing cancers. Scientists were able to keep breast cancers from spreading to the lungs of mice by giving them curcumin.
Asian children have a much lower risk of childhood leukemia. Some scientists feel that the use of turmeric is partly responsible for the lower childhood leukemia rates. Turmeric has been shown to destroy leukemia cells in laboratory tests.

Liver Detoxifier

Turmeric has been used for centuries for its ability to detoxify the liver. Several studies support this historical use with findings that turmeric can protect the liver from alcohol and other toxic substances.

Natural Blood Thinner

Turmeric can help to keep blood platelets from sticking together. This anti-platelet activity can have numerous health benefits. Not the least of which is helping to prevent blood clots, heart attack, and stroke.

Digestive Aid

One of the traditional uses of turmeric is as a digestive aid. The spice works by increasing bile production in the liver which helps with fat digestion. This same effect may also aid in weight loss.
Contraindications. Although turmeric is a fairly safe substance, large quantities should be avoided by those with bile obstructions or gallstones. Also, if you have a clotting disorder or are on blood thinning medications, consult your doctor before using turmeric

Humility

By Tejvan Pettinger

True humility means to live without a sense of ego. When we are humble we get joy through serving others and giving joy to others. True humility means we have a sense of oneness with others; when we are humble we can get joy from others achievements.

Humility does not mean self-criticism. Humility does not mean becoming like a slave to a master. Sometimes when we try to PROMOTE a false modesty and say how bad we are. Often in this case there is actually a sense of ego. We feel by making ourselves to be pitiable we may attract sympathy from others. True humility does not believe in this false modesty. When we are truly humble we avoid drawing unnecessary attention to ourselves. We neitherextol ourselves to the skies, nor do we make ourselves out to be a miserable failure.

Humility means we have a self-effacing attitude. We sublimate our personal desires and needs to the greater needs of others. An attitude of humility means that when we work towards something the outcome is not of important; we work with an attitude of detachment. If we take the outcome of efforts with an attitude of equanimity then this is real humility. It is the ego that seeks reward and praise.

“Humility does not mean that we will be always silent and shy, when inside we are criticizing others’ wrong actions and wrong judgments. Humility is the true inner wealth that unites us consciously with God.”(1)

If we are genuinely humble then people will naturally be drawn to us. When our ego comes to the fore it invariably creates conflict and tension. The nature of the ego is to compete with others; we have a constant sense of inferiority or superiority. However, an attitude of humility brings to the fore only our sense of oneness with others. When we are seeking to give equal or greater priority to others; people will instinctively respond in a positive and friendly way.

To develop humility we can think of Mother Nature and the qualities of a tree. No matter what we do to Mother Nature she continues to offer her beauty. A tree offers its shade and fruits without expecting any reward. We can also cultivate humility by seeking to think of others before ourselves. The most significant message of Jesus Christ was to “do unto others as you would have them do to you.” If we live this philosophy to the full, it will entail real humility. This is because when we think of others as an extension of our own reality we are not living to PROMOTE our own ego but to make others happy

Human Touch

Touch is the first sense to develop in the womb and the last sense to leave in old age. It is essential to the health and well being of human’s emotional, physical and mental development. It is so vital, in fact, that therapist and author Virginia Satir stated that human beings need four hugs a day for survival, eight hugs a day for maintenance and 12 hugs a day for growth.

A “Touch Phobic” Society

In today’s world, technology has reduced the amount of physical contact that people have with each other or daily basis. With automatic bank machines, ONLINE SHOPPING, internet, email and voice mail people can make appointments, dates or decisions without ever actually talking to or seeing another person. Those subtle contacts with others, once common on a daily basis are gone.

In addition, it is more common to hear about situations where touch has been used negatively or inappropriately. The news reports on child abuse cases, sexual harassment suits and rapes. Parents are teaching children to be wary of strangers, and to be selective in how and what to touch. Though this is beneficial to keep children safe, it has created a society that has become “touch phobic” where the simplest and most innocent touch can be easily misconstrued as sexual, or inappropriate.

Dr. Barnaby Barratt from Santa Barbara Consulting and Healing highlights in his article on Nurturing Touch that “affectional touch is highly beneficial so long as it is experienced as ‘appropriate’ to the situation, and does not impose greater intimacy than is desired, or is not part of some interpersonal ‘power play.’ Touching should neither be coercive nor manipulative. It should be purely giving, and never used as a means to an ends, for example, as a maneuver to get someone into unwanted sexual relations.”

Due to the overload of negative touch, society has become very guarded. When people are touched in any form it is often perceived as bad or inappropriate. Unfortunately, this change in perspective has denied people the simple opportunities to enhance their development and one of the key elements needed to thrive and grow.

Children and Touch

A child’s first and most important teacher is his sense of touch. It is the first sense he develops in the womb, and it begins to develop at only eight weeks. Babies need it to survive and grow, and this need remains with us throughout our lives.

In the 1940s, Doctor Fritz Talbot discovered on a visit to a children’s clinic that there is a strong connection between touch and babies ability to thrive. Babies that were being held, touched and mothered were thriving when all other medical possibilities had been exhausted.

This need for touch is especially true with premature babies. In one study, premature babies who received gentle daily massage thrived better and had a 50% more daily weight gains than those that were untouched. In addition, these babies had a more efficient metabolism and were released from the hospital six days earlier.

For young infants and toddlers, touch is a main source of learning about the world around them. They use their mouth and hands to explore and learn what things are and how things work. It is a key factor in their development as a child.

Benefits of Touch

The benefits of touch to a person’s health are phenomenal. Touch can reassure, relax and comfort. It reduces depression, anxiety, stress and physical pain; and can be healing. It increases the number of immune cells in the body, and has powerful affects on behavior and moods. Touch can be used as a form of alternative healing in the form of touch therapy.

In the video Touch: The Forgotten Sense produced by Max Films, a study was conducted where women who had been sexually abused were introduced to a good form of touch by receiving massage therapy. A masseuse of the same sex gave the massage, and this helped the women perceive touch as more positive. They also found that the massage reduced their stress level and depressed mood. This introduction of “safe touch” helped these women begin to become comfortable again with being touched.

In the same video, another study was conducted where researchers asked people who had spent no longer than 15 minutes in a library how they rated their experience in the library. People who had brushed hands “accidentally” with the planted librarian reported a more enjoyable time. In a similar study, people who were touched by their waitress, a brush of the hand, or a gentle touch on the shoulder, said they had a more enjoyable dining experience and left larger tips for the waitress as compared with those people who had no contact.

These studies also demonstrate that we don’t need to consciously notice the touch in order to reap the benefits. Of those that were touched in the library study, not all of the people remembered being touched, but still reported a more pleasant experience than those that weren’t touched at all. People use their sense of touch automatically and may take it for granted on a daily basis. Yet people really notice when there is a lack of it.

Positive Touch Benefits Everyone

Touch is vital to the positive health and development of all human beings, regardless of age. Humans need to touch and be touched, just like they need food and water. It is a way of communicating, lifting their spirits, and experiencing happiness in their lives. Without it, people experience sadness, loneliness and isolation. It is important to have this physical contact in people’s lives, yet in today’s society many people are removed from benefiting from it due to negative associations with touch or lack of someone to share touch with.

This is why people have started seeking other forms of human touch in their lives such as attending a Cuddle Party, going for a regular massage, or experiencing other forms of healthy touch.

Honesty

Reasons Why Honesty is the Best Policy.

The saying, “Honesty is the best policy,” has been proven to be true; over and over again. It is more than an old cliché. It is just a good way to live your life. Being honest offers a number of benefits for us in our daily lives. Below I have listed five outstanding reasons to be honest in the way that you live.

1.) Honesty is the easiest choice

Being honest is completely by choice. Each day we make the decision to either, live in an honest manner or a dishonest manner. Honesty is the easiest choice that we can make. I am not saying being honest is always easy.” I would rather someone be upset with me for being honest than for keeping peace by being dishonest.

Dishonesty is like a spider’s web, sticky. When an insect gets caught in the web, it usually costs them their lives. When people get caught in lies, it always costs them something. How many people have been ruined over lying? How many relationships are destroyed by lies? How many hearts have been broken because of lies?

2.) Honesty reveals your character

When we live a lifestyle of honesty, we build up our character. Character is simply a snapshot of who we really are. Character is the window that people look through to the reality of our inner life. Dishonesty is simply a part of our human nature and creeps into the inner recesses of our hearts. It creates cracks in our character and in the way people are able to see us. Dishonesty does nothing but erode and destroy our foundation of character. When we lose our character, we actually lose part of who we are and who we might become. Dishonesty carries much too high a price.

 3.) Honesty gives us freedom

Honesty sets us free from not only, being false with people but also from living with a façade over our lives. When we are honest, we no longer have to be fake in the way we live. There is incredible freedom in knowing that you never have to cover your tracks with remembering what lies you told to whom. Honesty gives us tremendous freedom in life. Many believe that being honest limits them in life but that simply is not true. Dishonesty will eventually catch up with people and they will pay a price. When we are honest, we are truly free.

 4.) Honesty gives you credibility

Since we are being honest, who would you be more likely to believe, a person with a record of being honest or a person who is known to be dishonest? The majority of people would side with the honest person, each and every time. When we are honest, we build credibility. Being credible simply means that our words line up with the truth. Either we live in the truth or we live in lies. Truth sets us free and lies leave us in nothing but more bondage. When others are able to depend on our word and rely on our actions, we become credible in life. You can Transform you entier life by stop telling lies and embrace the truth. Read this Amazing Book on How to Transform Your Life by Telling the Truth by Sparrowhawk Publications

5.) Honesty keeps you out of trouble

Honesty allows us to stay out of trouble that we make for ourselves. I am not saying that if we are honest, we will not experience troubles. Sadly, I have known individuals who stood for the truth and paid a high price for it. I firmly believe that I would rather pay a high price for being honest and truthful than to be spared a momentary pain at the price of being dishonest.

Honesty gives us a greater chance of not experiencing troubles of our own making. Many times people either create troubles by lying or only compound their troubles by lying. When we stand for honesty, we truly stand. When we allow ourselves to lower to standards of dishonesty, we will always fall.

Read about Honesty, Morality, and Conscience by NavPress | In an age that is creating immense pressures on individuals to keep pace and survive in a global economy, a book such as Honesty, Morality & Conscience is much needed to reinforce ethics for living life in the marketplace with integrity.

Some of the most painful character attacks I have ever endured have surrounded my honesty. The moment I lose my honesty, I lose who I am and who I want to become. Honesty is at the heart of who we are and what we believe in. Honesty reveals the inner being and opens our lives to show something greater and deeper within. Never forget, honesty is a choice and we make it each day. We will either be honest or be dishonest. The choice is yours, what will you choose?

Helping Others

The Bank Account

What a nice way to remind one you get out of life what you put into it
and remind us all of how lucky we really are.
BANK ACCOUNT!!!

This is AWESOME … something we should all remember.
A 92-year-old, petite, well-poised and proud man, who is fully dressed each
morning by eight o’clock, with his hair fashionably combed and shaved perfectly, even though he is legally blind, moved to a nursing home today.

His wife of 70 years recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, he smiled sweetly when told his room was ready. As he maneuvered his walker to the elevator, I provided a visual description of his tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on his window.

I love it,’ he stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just
been presented with a new puppy.

Mr. Jones, you haven’t seen the room; just wait….’
‘That doesn’t have anything to do with it,’ he replied. Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time.  Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is  arranged… it’s how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it.

‘It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice;
I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts
of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do.
Each day is a gift, and as long as my eyes open, I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away.. Just for this time in my life..
Old age is like a bank account. You withdraw from what you’ve put in.
So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account
of memories!
Thank you for your part in filling my Memory Bank. I am still depositing.
‘Remember the five simple rules to be happy:
1. Free your heart from hatred.
2. Free your mind from worries.
3. Live simply.
4. Give more.
5. Expect less.

Happiness in helping others

500 balloons story

Once a group of 500 people were attending a seminar. Suddenly the speaker stopped and decided to do a group activity. He started giving each person a balloon. Each person was then asked to write their name on it using a marker pen. Then all the balloons were collected and put in another room. The people were then let into that room and asked to find the balloon which had their name written on it within 5 minutes. Everyone was frantically searching for their name, colliding with each other, pushing around others and there was utter chaos.

At the end of 5 minutes no one could find their own balloon. Then, the speaker asked each person to randomly collect a balloon and give it to the person whose name was written on it. Within minutes everyone had their own balloon.

The speaker then began, “This is happening in our lives. Everyone is frantically looking for happiness all around, not knowing where it is. Our happiness lies in the happiness of other people. Give them their happiness; you will get your own happiness. And this is the purpose of human life…the pursuit of  happiness.”

-by Allan Luks

Allan Luks, former executive director of the Institute for the Advancement of Health and executive director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of New York City, has studied kindness and the clear cause-and-effect relationship between helping and  good health.

Some of the most significant findings of his research include the following:

  1. Helping others contributes to the maintenance of good health and can diminish the effect of minor and serious psychological and physical diseases and disorders.
  1. The rush of euphoria often referred to as a “helper’s high” after performing a kind act involves physical sensations and the release of the body’s natural painkillers, the endorphins. The initial rush is followed by a longer period of calm and improved emotional well-being.

3 .The health benefits and sense of well-being return for hours or even days whenever the helping act            is remembered.

4.Stress related health problems improve after performing kind acts. Helping others:

  • Supplies social contact.
  • Reverses feelings of depression
  • Reduces feelings of hostility and isolation that can cause stress, overeating, ulcers, etc.
  • Decreases the constriction in the lungs that leads to asthma attacks
  1. Helping can enhance feelings of joyfulness, emotional resilience, and vigor, and can reduce theunhealthy senseof isolation.
  2. The awareness and intensity of physical pain can decrease.
  3. Attitudes such as chronic hostility that negatively arouse and damage the body are reduced.
  4. A sense of self-worth, greater happiness, and optimism is increased, and feelings of helplessnessand depression decrease.
  5. When we establish an “affiliative connection” with someone (a relationship of friendship, love, or somesort of positive bonding), we feel emotions that can strengthen the immune system.
  6. Caring for strangers leads to immense immune and healing benefits.
  7. Regular club attendance, volunteering, entertaining, or faith group attendance is the happiness equivalent of getting a college degree, or more than doubling your income. Book on Health and Spiritual Benefits of Helping Others

Whether you’ve been cut off in traffic, slighted by your mother-in-law, betrayed by a spouse, or badmouthed by a co-worker, most of us are faced with a variety of situations that we can choose to ruminate over or forgive. But forgiveness, like so many things in life, is easier said than done.

Forgiveness can be a challenge for several reasons. Sometimes forgiveness can be confused with condoning what someone has done to us: “That’s OK. Why not do it again?” Forgiveness can be difficult when the person who wronged us doesn’t seem to deserve our forgiveness — it’s hard to remember that forgiveness benefits the forgiver more than the one who is forgiven. Ultimately, forgiveness is especially challenging because it’s hard to let go of what’s happened. However, it’s important to let go and forgive. Here are some reasons why:

Forgiveness is good for your heart — literally. One study from the Journal of Behavioral Medicine found forgiveness to be associated with lower heart rate and BLOOD PRESSURE as well as stress relief. This can bring long-term health benefits for your heart and overall health.

A later study found forgiveness to be positively associated with five measures of health: physical symptoms, medications used, sleep quality, fatigue, and somatic complaints. It seems that the reduction in negative affect (depressive symptoms), strengthened spirituality, conflict management and stress relief one finds through forgiveness all have a significant impact on overall health.

A third study, published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, found that forgiveness not only restores positive thoughts, feelings and behaviors toward the offending party (in other words, forgiveness restores the relationship to its previous positive state), but the benefits of forgiveness spill over to positive behaviors toward others outside of the relationship. Forgiveness is associated with more volunteerism, donating to charity, and other altruistic behaviors. (And the converse is true of non-forgiveness.)

So, to sum it up, forgiveness is good for your body, your relationships, and your place in the world. That’s reason enough to convince virtually anyone to do the work of letting go of anger and working on forgiveness.

See this article for some simple strategies on how to forgive.

Will Bring Happiness and Peace
So here are the 7 steps to peace of mind, happiness, freedom and forgiveness:

1. Find Your Clarity

Before you can forgive somebody, it’s essential that you clearly identify the offense against you. Exactly what was it that hurt you? And why, until now, have you been unable, or unwilling, to forgive them?

There are times in all our lives when we may feel tremendous anger and loathing towards someone (usually someone we are related to, married to, or work with) but cannot articulate exactly why we feel the way we do.

Emotions can be blinding. So the trick is to start by thinking about these three questions:

Who hurt you?

What hurt you?

And why did this action offend you as it did?

This kind of self-reflection is the all-important first step in the act of forgiveness.

2. Find A Friend Who Listens Well

Once you have some clarity, it’s time to talk it over with someone you trust. An empathetic and non-judgmental pair of ears is what you need here. (Go to a supportive friend, NOT one that disagrees with you on everything, okay?)

This might be a friend, family member, spiritual leader, or a trained therapist. Unburdening yourself is going to feel really good, and help you find some answers.

3. Don’t Suppress The Pain

Pain – physical and emotional – shows up for the best of us. You may be in the habit of suppressing your emotional pain – your deepest wounds – because, frankly, that HURTS. Who wants to feel THAT?

But while you might feel better suppressing in the short-term, it’s incredibly detrimental in the long-term. Being numb doesn’t mean you got better, it just means you stopped feeling. On the other hand, if you opt to merely wallow in anger – in lieu of serious reflection – you’ll get stuck there like a dinosaur in a tar pit.

And, on top of everything else, this anger will entrench itself deeper and deeper in your psyche, and you’ll NEVER feel free. Yikes.

Feeling the pain to heal the pain is key.

4. The Truth Will Set you free

By accepting the depths of your genuine feelings, you can start to forgive yourself. If you deny your bona fide feelings, forgiveness will never be possible. It’s important to start with yourself, because sometimes we are harder on ourselves than anyone else!

So you get clear, and you talk it out, and you feel it all, and something cool happens. A doorway starts to open to INSIGHT. You will begin to see things differently.

Why? Because emotion is really slanted. It always distorts the truth. Only when you calm down and feel your feelings and begin to get still can the truth arise.

5. Honestly Assess Your Role in the Transgression

Life is a far cry from a seamless odyssey. Often it’s a mess. So it’s important to own up to your role in the mess. You might uncover that you were anything but an innocent bystander.

By allowing yourself to see the big picture, you can discover how you can do it better next time. In being totally honest with yourself about what happened and WHY it happened, the act of forgiveness automatically becomes more sincere and heartfelt.

6. The Decision

There will ultimately come a moment when you must decide whether or not to face the person who wronged you. Very often, this decision is clear-cut. That is, if it’s a relationship of legitimate value to you – one that you want to save or make better – meeting and forgiving the person in question is the obvious road to travel down.

If, however, the individual does not fit into this category, there is nothing wrong with forgiving him or her in your heart of hearts, and getting on with your life. Forgiveness is in essence a release – a letting go – for YOU, not the other side.

The fact that you’ve found it in yourself to unconditionally forgive a person is an incredibly uplifting and empowering experience in and of itself!

7. Forgiveness is a Process

We live in an age of instant gratification. We’re used to FAST fulfillment. But there’s no such thing as high-speed forgiveness. Genuine forgiveness takes time. It’s a healing process. And depending on the gravity of the transgression against you, it could take a while. Allow the 7 steps to forgiveness to unfold at a pace that’s right for you and what you want to accomplish.

Peace is possible, and you are on the road to it!

Wishing you the power to forgive and let go —

Reconciliation Meditation   |   Dana

The act of forgiveness is a spiritual practice in and of itself.

Forgiveness practice acknowledges what you have done or what someone has done to you. By taking responsibility or acknowledging the act, you can move towards “letting go” rather than have it enmeshed as part of your identity. This does not mean that you won’t have regrets but rather that you are not imprisoned by those regrets.

Practicing forgiveness is something you do for your own sake, in order not to be locked in anger and fear. It’s crucial to understand that we are not necessarily forgiving “the act” but opening to forgiving the person.

If you haven’t forgiven yourself or others, it is hard to open your heart to loving-kindness. To meet hatred and loss with love and a generous heart is a most difficult practice.

Attending Church

Credit : Andrea Kalfas

ONE of the most striking scientific discoveries about religion in recent years is that going to church weekly is good for you. Religious attendance — at least, religiosity — boosts the immune system and decreases blood pressure. It may add as much as two to three years to your life. The reason for this is not entirely clear.

Social support is no doubt part of the story. At the evangelical churches I’ve studied as an anthropologist, people really did seem to look out for one another. They showed up with dinner when friends were sick and sat to talk with them when they were unhappy. The help was sometimes surprisingly concrete. Perhaps a third of the church members belonged to small groups that met weekly to talk about the Bible and their lives. One evening, a young woman in a group I joined began to cry. Her dentist had told her that she needed a $1,500 procedure, and she didn’t have the money. To my amazement, our small group — most of them students — simply covered the cost, by anonymous donation. A study conducted in North Carolina found that frequent churchgoers had larger social networks, with more contact with, more affection for, and more kinds of social support from those people than their unchurched counterparts. And we know that social support is directly tied to better health.

Healthy behavior is no doubt another part. Certainly many churchgoers struggle with behaviors they would like to change, but on average, regular church attendees drink less, smoke less, use fewer recreational drugs and are less sexually promiscuous than others.

That tallies with my own observations. At a church I studied in Southern California, the standard conversion story seemed to tell of finding God and never taking methamphetamine again. (One woman told me that while cooking her dose, she set off an explosion in her father’s apartment and blew out his sliding glass doors. She said to me, “I knew that God was trying to tell me I was going the wrong way.”) In my next church, I remember sitting in a house group listening to a woman talk about an addiction she could not break. I assumed that she was talking about her own struggle with methamphetamine. It turned out that she thought she read too many novels.

Yet I think there may be another factor. Any faith demands that you experience the world as more than just what is material and observable. This does not mean that God is imaginary, but that because God is immaterial, those of faith must use their imaginations to represent God. To know God in an evangelical church, you must experience what can only be imagined as real, and you must also experience it as good.

I want to suggest that this is a skill and that it can be learned. We can call it absorption: the capacity to be caught up in your imagination, in a way you enjoy. What I saw in church as an anthropological observer was that people were encouraged to listen to God in their minds, but only to pay attention to mental experiences that were in accord with what they took to be God’s character, which they took to be good. I saw that people were able to learn to experience God in this way, and that those who were able to experience a loving God vividly were healthier — at least, as judged by a standardized psychiatric scale. Increasingly, other studies bear out this observation that the capacity to imagine a loving God vividly leads to better health.

For example, in one study, when God was experienced as remote or not loving, the more someone prayed, the more psychiatric distress she seemed to have; when God was experienced as close and intimate, the more someone prayed, the less ill he was. In another study, at a private Christian college in Southern California, the positive quality of an attachment to God significantly decreased stress and did so more effectively than the quality of the person’s relationships with other people.

Eventually, this may teach us how to harness the “placebo” effect — a terrible word, because it suggests an absence of intervention rather than the presence of a healing mechanism that depends neither on pharmaceuticals nor on surgery. We do not understand the placebo effect, but we know it is real. That is, we have increasingly better evidence that what anthropologists would call “symbolic healing” has real physical effects on the body. At the heart of some of these mysterious effects may be the capacity to trust that what can only be imagined may be real, and be good.

But not everyone benefits from symbolic healing. Earlier this month, the youngest son of the famed pastor Rick Warren took his own life. We know few details, but the loss reminds us that to feel despair when you want to feel God’s love can worsen the sense of alienation. We urgently need more research on the relationship between mental illness and religion, not only so that we understand that relationship more intimately — the ways in which they are linked and different — but to lower the shame for those who are religious and nonetheless need to reach out for other care.

Crying – Benefits

Whether it’s to mourn the end of a close relationship or because of the sheer frustration of a bad day at work, once you come to wipe the tears away, the world can seem like it’s been put back together again.

Now research has suggested that tears could actually be a way of flushing negative chemicals out of the body and doing you a world of good. We look at why it’s good to cry.

Three types of tears

Emotional/stress-related tears

A study by Dr William H. Frey II, a biochemist at the St Paul-Ramsey Medical Centre in Minnesota, found that there is an important chemical difference between emotional or stress-related tears and those simply caused by physical irritants – such as when cutting onions.

They found that emotional tears contained more of the protein-based hormones prolactin, adrenocorticotropic hormone, and leucine enkephalin (a natural painkiller), all of which are produced by our body when under stress.

Basal tears

We all need the layer of protective fluid covering our eyeballs known as continuous or basal tears.

This fluid is secreted by the lachrymal glands, which sit above each eye, and without it our eyes would be in danger of drying out and become susceptible to bacterial attack.

Basal tears contain lysozyme, a powerful and fast acting antibacterial and anti-viral agent. Without this, the eye – because it’s a moist environment – would suffer enormous amounts of bacterial attack and you could potentially go blind.

Eye watering

One of the most important functions crying can have is to protect our eyes from irritants and foreign bodies, such as dust or getting rid of the acidic fumes when cutting onions.

These tears are known as reflex tears. When our eyes come under attack from irritants, the lachrymal glands in our eyes start stimulating more fluid to wash away the irritant and drain it from the eye.

So, how do tears help us emotionally?

Emotional or stress-related tears are thought to help us through difficult times in a number of ways.

Physically, they are thought to wash toxic chemicals out of our bodies, while psychologically giving your feelings a good airing is thought to be a healthy tonic.

Stress release

Crying is thought to help reduce stress, which can have a damaging effect on our health and has been linked to a number of health problems including heart disease, high blood pressure, type-2 diabetes and obesity.

According to the Minnesota study, crying can help to wash chemicals linked to stress out of our body, one of the reasons we feel much better after a good cry. Higher levels of adrenocorticotrophic (ACTH) have been found in emotional tears (compared to reflex tears).

Removing this chemical from the body is beneficial because it triggers cortisol, the stress hormone – too much of which can lead to health problems associated with stress.

‘Crying can help release tension and stress, as well as expressing emotions,’ says Dr Abigael San, chartered clinical psychologist.

‘When you’re upset and stressed, you have an imbalance and build up of chemicals in the body and crying helps to reduce that.’

Dealing with sorrow

Aside from removing toxic substances from our body, crying can also have the psychological benefit of lifting our mood and helping us to deal with painful situations.

Deep crying is generally felt to be good for you in that it exposes and expresses deep emotions, which means they can then be dealt with.

‘The Freudian theory is that it’s beneficial to get feelings out, that if you let them fester they can affect you physically and psychologically,’ says Professor Gail Kinman, an occupational health psychologist who has carried out research on crying in the workplace.

‘Whether crying is good for you depends a lot on the reasons for it, the context, and how it is handled.

‘Public displays tend to be looked down on, and any emotional catharsis in a situation, such as the work place, may be far outweighed by disapproval, embarrassment and guilt.

‘Many women from my research, however, do say they sometimes feel like they need a good cry – and that they feel emotionally cleansed afterwards.’

Crying can also signal a need for help from others and bring people together.

People are usually more likely to help someone when they see them dissolve into tears, and it can prompt helpful behaviour.

It may also be a signal for physical contact, such as a hug or reassuring hand placed on an arm – and touch has been linked with helping stress reduction.

A group approach can help individuals in overcoming upsetting or difficult situations.

Too many tears

However, frequent crying is not always good for you and can be a sign of more serious conditions, such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and postnatal depression.

What’s more, the healing affect of crying won’t work for everyone.

Researchers have discovered that people who suffer a mood disorder are less likely to feel better after crying.

‘If you’re depressed and crying all the time, it’s not good and you might need help,’ says Dr Abigael San.

Counting the tears

88.8 per cent of people feel better after crying, with 8.4 per cent feeling worse.

On average women cry 47 times a year and men a mere seven.

Until puberty, crying levels are much the same for each gender – testosterone may reduce crying in boys while oestrogen and prolactin increases the tendency in girls.

Men may excrete more of the toxins related to emotional stress in their sweat because they have higher sweat levels than women.

The mantra to children ‘Be brave, don’t cry’ might not be the most helpful because some believe crying can actually help reduce pain.

Giving and Sharing

I have a friend who has had a terrible case of lupus for nearly twenty years. She has been hospitalized many times and is constantly on medication that has horrible side effects, including cataracts. She had to quit her job as a graphic designer and now is completely supported by her husband. She can get really down about her life. Recently she decided to become a volunteer at a soup kitchen. She goes when she feels up to it, and she’s started to discover that the more she goes, the better she feels—emotionally and physically. Her arthritis (a consequence of lupus) isn’t as severe and she has more energy.

Helping others can not only make us feel good about ourselves; it can also increase our physical well-being. The mind and body aren’t separate. Anything we do to elevate our spirits will also have a beneficial effect on our health. A recent study by Cornell University found that volunteering increases a person’s energy, sense of mastery over life, and self-esteem. Other studies have demonstrated that such positive feelings can actually strengthen and enhance the immune system. Positive emotions increase the body’s number of T-cells, cells in the immune system that help the body resist disease and recover quickly from illness. Positive emotions also release endorphins into the bloodstream. Endorphins are the body’s natural tranquilizers and painkillers; they stimulate dilation of the blood vessels, which leads to a relaxed heart.

While we don’t quite understand all the reasons why giving creates good health, many studies have documented generosity’s positive effects. Michigan researchers who studied 2,700 people for almost ten years found that men who regularly did volunteer work had death rates two-and-one half times lower than men who didn’t. In a separate study, volunteers who worked directly with those who benefited from their services had a greater immune system boost than those whose volunteer work was restricted to pushing papers.

Harvard researchers also conducted a study that showed how giving is such a powerful immune booster that it can be experienced just by watching someone else in the act of giving! In this well-known experiment, students looking at a film of Mother Teresa as she tended the sick in Calcutta—even those who purported to dislike Mother Teresa—got an increase in immune function.

Psychologist Robert Ornstein and physician David Sobel are well known for their examinations of the health effects of altruism. In their book Healthy Pleasures, they describe what they call the “helper’s high,” a kind of euphoria volunteers get when helping others—a warm glow in the chest and a sense of vitality that comes from being simultaneously energized and calm. They compare it to a runner’s high and claim it is caused by the body’s release of endorphins. Because of all these health benefits, as Stella Reznick says in The Pleasure Zone, “the one who ends up getting the most from a good deed may, ultimately, be the good Samaritan.”

Generosity Alleviates Fear

I’ve never had the privilege of meeting writer Anne Lamott, but I have loved her books, particularly Operating Instructions. Her emotional honesty leaps off every page—here is a woman who is not afraid to show herself, warts and all. In admitting her vulnerabilities, she makes it okay for us to be just who we are too.

In an interview, she was asked about her relationship to money. As a single mother living off her writing, her financial security has been precarious at best. She spoke of having survived, at times, off the generosity of friends, and then said something that leaped out at me. “I know that if I feel any deprivation or fear [about money], the solution is to give. The solution is to go find some mothers on the streets of San Raphael and give them tens and twenties and mail off another $50 to Doctors Without Borders to use for the refugees in Kosovo. Because I know that giving is the way we can feel abundant. Giving is the way that we fill ourselves up…. For me the way to fill up is through service and sharing and getting myself to give more than I feel comfortable giving.”

To me, a person who has a great deal of fear when it comes to money, the thought of giving money away precisely when I felt like clinging to it seemed terrifying. Sick of constantly being fearful about money, I decided to give it a try. Amazingly, it really works. I feel less afraid the more I give.

It’s a paradox. If we are afraid of not having enough, we think we need to hold on tightly to what we have and work hard to get more. As Anne Lamott and I found out, that perspective only makes us more afraid, because we get caught in a cycle of clinging and hoarding. When is enough enough? Is $5,000 enough? $50,000? $100,000? $1 million? A recent study found that no matter how much money people made, they thought they would be happier if only they had more. Whether they made $20,000 a year or $200,000, everyone thought they needed a bit more.

If we turn around and give instead of hoarding everything, we suddenly experience the abundance we do have. Most of us, particularly those of us living in Western societies, have a great deal, and when we share what we have, we feel our abundance. It becomes real to us, and that diminishes our fears. I read about a woman who was suffering from depression and contemplating suicide because of back pain and poverty. She found a kid foraging in the Dumpster and thought to herself, “I don’t have a lot, but at least I can fix this kid a peanut butter sandwich.” Giving away that peanut butter sandwich reminded her of the abundance she still had, even in the projects. If she could still give, her life wasn’t so bleak after all. She now runs a volunteer program in Dallas that feeds hundreds of kids a day. It started from that one day when she gave away the sandwich
